I sometimes buy some no name brand soft plastics, these are quite nice for if smallish bass are biting and tearing up the expensive lures. These cheap worms work quite well, but they can dry out, so I wanted to know if it would be ok to mix some garlic powder in with some sunflower oil and coat them in it? Will the oil put the fish off? I won't drench them in it, I just want to keep them moist, and maybe add some taste with the garlic. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I've read that mineral oil (baby oil, etc.) is not compatible with soft plastic and will harden it, but vegetable oil is probably ok. The garlic scent will not scare the fish away and may even attract them. Instead of garlic powder, I would crush a few fresh garlic cloves and let them soak in your oil for a week or more to "flavor" the oil with actual oils from the garlic. Also possible to use coffee as a scent/flavor in an oil but it may darken the oil a bit. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Jig Man Posted March 7, 2012 Report Share Posted March 7, 2012 I doubt it would have any adverse effect. I have used garlic powder with petroleum jelly as a scent on FnF jigs for several years. Jared2608 Posted March 8, 2012 Author Report Share Posted March 8, 2012 Thanks guys. When you lubricate the moulds with vegetable oil, I assume it coats the lures in it too. Do you wash it off or just use it like that?? I guess the only way to know for sure is to try it. I think just a drop or two in a packet will coat the lures nicely but not chase the fish off. Jig Man Posted March 8, 2012 Report Share Posted March 8, 2012 No I don't wash it off. When I inject tubes I find that dipping the nose rod into oil lets me get the tubes off real easy. I used to do it when I vertical dipped with metal rods so I just continued with the injecting. I also have to lube my homemade molds for injecting crappie slab busters or they won't inject at all. I sometimes spray baits in a plastic bag with WD-40 though I have heard it is not legal in some stated to do that. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Well, thanks again, I'm going to try make my own worm sauce, hopefully it'll get even more fish to eat those no name plastics, and when my plastisol arrives, I'll use it on my own ones too!!
