dchance
I now have a good source of ww if I want them. My question is, without having to purchase anyting special, what can be used to melt them down? If I get an old cast iron pot, how can I heat it to get hot enough to melt. Will a propane turkey fryer get hot enough???
Jig Man
I use my fish fryer and a cast iron pot to melt down scrap lead and even babbitt for spoons. I have a piece of angle iron bent up at both ends. I ladel the material into it and let it set up. Then I cut it to lenght with a hatchet. dchance
awesome thanks. I jsut wasnt sure if the fryer would get hot enough. that sounds easy, I can steal a muffin tin from the wife. Now, what have you found to work best for skimming?
Alaskajigs
For skimming I use that wood paint stirring sticks they give away at paint stores. Wal Mart has them as well.
Jig Man
I have a big old spoon with a dowel taped to the handle so I won't get too close and burn myself. I never would have thought about the wood thingy as I'm thinking the heat would cause immediate combustion but like I said, I never would have thought to try that. Does it stick to the wood? If not how do you get it out of the pot?
sdsaw
Now, what have you found to work best for skimming? I use a piece of aluminum tubing with chicken wire wedged into it to form a spoon I also use a cheap pair of tongs to fish out the clips It will be a good time to flux the lead before fishing out the clips
BLT
Remember to do it outside on a day not calling for rain at all. Stay up wind. I just use a big spoon to skim off the top.I have thick leather gloves on, never needed anything other than the large spoon. A gravy spoon I guess it would be. gonfishn
Take you rtime and use wax to flux, you'll be surprised how much sludge you'll end up skimming. the more you stir the wax in, the more gunk you'll gt.
BLT
And in case nobody said it yet, make sure none of the sinkers have a "Z" on them, or "zn", they are zink and will really sludge up your lead.
archeryrob
No cleaning needed, Heat and burn it all. Just stay back and do not breath near it. At least until it quits smoking. Edited March 16, 2012 by archeryrob
