Action And Movement Of A Lure

Recommended Posts

Something that I think many tackle makers forget about is the swimming action of lures and how they work in the water. Many think more about the paint and clear coat and forget about the design when carving their lures. Don't get me wrong the colour scheme is Just as important and some of the lures here on TU are astounding but I can't help noticing some forgetting about the design while carving lure. When luari rapala first designed the original floater in 1936 in Finland he didn't really think much about its colour scheme, he was just trying to capture the appearance of a wounded baitfish minnow. I myselfe do not have very nice painted lures, if you haven seen the couple of pictures I had than you will know that, not to say i dont care and am not trying to improve. I have spent countless hours perfecting my wooden blanks, instead of practicing my painting skills.

What I want to say though is I did not write this article to offend anyone just to simply remind you that there are many different factors effecting the success of the lure.

Totally agree!

The colour is secondary. Lures require certain characterics ( wobbles ) when they're used for trolling but when casting them, they're only as good as the angler who uses them. In the case of triggering neutral muskies for example, certain baits ( gliders, jerkbaits ) require finesse and subtle movements that can only be achieved by the angler.

Many musky anglers swear by the colour black. Go figure!

I too totally agree. For me, action is everything. Today I made a batch of twelve lures that I will be fishing tomorrow. No paint or epoxy top coat, naked with a few dips of prop. Hopefully they will all be waterlogged and shredded by the end of tomorrow, that will make me very happy.

Very Funny Dave.

Really enjoyed your blip diary. Thanks for sharing. I need a drink after the read. :tipsy: Been there myself. Not literally of course but big fishing trip to some promised lake in a new setting with great expectations. Only to leave empty handed at great personal expense.

Some very nice blips as well. Really like the shot of the lake. Looks so promising.

You missed a pretty big spot with sunblock. I make point to cover those places you missed at the expense of all else. Who knew we had so many muscles on our face and we use them every minute of every day. :nuhuh:

Finally, that muffler burn was scary. :pissed: I know this pain well having ridden motorcycles since I was old enough to hold one up. From the sound of the read it was the lesser of two evils. I would have liked to have seen a blip of the cliff. Maybe next trip?

Heal up my friend and keep the blips coming.

So has anyone here ever studied ichthyology? (the study of fish) I just ask because you can learn allot about how certain fish see, smell and feel lures (food) in the water. How they notice small fish or bait fish going to the surface for bugs or the like...which can induce a strike near or on the surface... or a fish dieing on the surface how it flaps about in randomness, diving and then floating back up to the surface... most lures try to act this way but most still don't get it down just right....but close works in fishing. As far as paint goes it really does seem to make a small bit of difference to get more detail... scent can help sometimes... streamers can help sometimes to imitate bleeding, a gel with glitter in it can be used to look like scales falling off in the water... it all helps.
