Mustad 32786dr Ultra Point Red Jig Hook?

Recommended Posts

Scott,

I still need to call you I know. I've been busy. As far as I know, the best red color comes from gold colored hooks and yes they chip easily. I keep a red indelible marker in the boat for touch-ups. I found the Spike-It blade dip works better on a bright nickle plated hook then buying pre-plated red, however that chips as well also.

I have a bunch of red Mustad hooks and yes, from beating around in the box the red will chip off and they are all gold hooks underneith. I just use these hook during practice days to use them up. I can't tell if the fish really care, LOL. I fish freshwater so I don't know if they corrode or not in saltwater.

Thanks guys!

I figured that the finish will chip easily. Every red hook that I've seen seems to have this problem.

Jann's Netcraft has these in 2/0 on clearance for $8.99 for a 100

I'll just stick with the BLN hooks for now.

Cadman,

e-mail works good.

If it get's confusing or not clear, we can talk

BTW, just got the do-it shad style #9- 1/4oz and 3/8oz and the mustad 32833BLN in 2/0 looks perfect in that mold without modification

SD, thats excellent news on the 32833 fit. Inspired me to pull out my Do-its for another go but nope, that 32833 short leg is a deal breaker. Have to get out the drill press one day.

How is the quality on your 32833s, particularly points? Recent purchase of #2s had around 70 hooks out of a box with finish imperfections noticeable enuf to prevent use for sale, altho points seemed OK. After the recent batch of bad point 2/0 & 3/0 32786BLN I don't trust Mustad.

The red hooks catch fish - the underlying gold seems attractive when the red starts wearing off. But the BLN looks better for sale especially for tying since vice jaws tend to mar the red.

hawnjigs, sorry to hear that the 32833 won't work for you

Would a slight bend in the shank make the leg long enough?

I just ordered 50 2/0 32833's from Barlows and they seem fine in both sharpness and finish but that's only 50 hooks. I would imagine that they are repackaging from bulk for these smaller quantities.

I hope Eagle Claw comes on strong by expanding their line of black platinum hooks to the heavy wire hooks.

You pour jigs and fish in the saltwater, right?

Do you notice if the gold finish underneath the red hooks resists corrosion very well?

"Would a slight bend in the shank make the leg long enough?"

That would angle the eye leg towards the point, which can work if the mold eye cavity connects to the head cavity flush without a leg slot. The smaller size 32833s I have exhibit a curiously soft temper which allows bending the eye leg from 90* to 60* with under 10% breaks at the elbow. So, in addition to the 60* conversion the elbow bent hooks can then be shank bent again back to 90* to more effectively lengthen the eye-shank distance. For pouring heads in quantity tho it would be more time efficient to just modify the mold eye slots for short legs. The quality & value of 32833 certainly makes it worthwile.

Never used red or gold hooks much for salt water, & they get snagged and lost before any significant rust survival can be observed. Heck, lots of jigs are lost on the first cast out my way. Young kids should not be in earshot on one of my bad days.
