The Guide's Tackle Box

Recommended Posts

When I was a kid I was lucky to have a retired fishing guide as a recreational fishing partner, his name is Joe. He had two large tackle boxes with lures to use while trolling small mountain lakes for rainbow trout. In a time period when almost all northern fishers used a gang troll and worm to bring in fish for the table, Joe didn't own a single string of blades. He guided many clients between the '50s and '70s, most of limited expierience. An old Willys jeep was used to access the lakes when the roads were good and a tractor with a hay wagon when the mud was too bad for the little Willys.

Inside the tackle boxes were the lures used by the clients over the years. Two types of lures dominate the boxes, wooden Flatfish and Hot Shot plugs. Joe would supply the customer with a light weight lure to maximize the sport. When Joe fished he would go one step further and troll a fly, often an attractor streamer pattern. When a 2-5 lb Rainbow is hooked on this minimal gear in a cold mountain lake the resulting fight is unforgetable! I'm sure that this was part of the foundation for a lifetime of enjoyable fishing memories for me. Thanks Joe.

The real morale here is don't be afraid to gear back. Fish can see at least as well as you and I. They offten feed on the smallest of aquatic insects. They will notice anything in thier environment. You will enjoy the sport a lot more if you start to see things at the fish eye level. Also don't be closed minded, you can fly fish in the morning and cast plugs in the afternoon. Above all else TAKE A KID FISHING, it's the only way to ensure a future for our great sport.
