Musky Glenn
I would like to have slower speed gears for the 5501 left hand Garcia reels. Does anyone know if the Revo Toro winch gears are a fit for the 5501 (left hand) I would love to have the 3.8 to 1, which they don't make anymore, or would settle for the 4.7 to 1. Anyone want to sell a 3.8 to 1 left hand reel, any brand. Musky Glenn
BobP
Glenn, I'm doubtful a Revo gear would fit but I'd be surprised if there is not one that will. I recommend calling http://www.southwesternparts.com/ and asking one of their techs if such an animal exists. If no joy there, I'd get on one of the saltwater sites like stripersonline.com and ask them. Edited April 2, 2012 by BobP

Griffond
Why so low of a ration Musky Glenn? Trolling rigs?
RayburnGuy
Why so low of a ration Musky Glenn? Trolling rigs? Years ago the 3.8 to 1 gear ratio was the gold standard for crankbait reels. And they are still valued by some of the more dedicated crankbait fishermen. Once upon a time a 5.3 to 1 ratio was considered high speed. These days the 5.3 to 1 is about as low a ratio as you can find. The lower speed reels, like the 3.8 to 1, required less energy from the angler to retrieve deep diving cranks. Another thought was the lower speed also made it less likely that you would pull the bait away from the fish while he was trying to eat it. Griffond
Ok this might sound kinda corny but my family has been using them for years and I keep one in the boat for the fun of it... what about a zebco 33 they have a low gear ratio... there are good quality ones now... Musky Glenn
I want it for musky size lures like double blade number 10's. Even Alabama rigs are hard to pull when large jig heads are used. I remember one thing about Lance Armstrong's bikes was that he used a lower gear than most because he could peddle faster with less effort than using a higher gear ratio at a slower speed. The effort in reeling number 10 blades is so much easier with 3.8 gears than higher gears. I have been using 3.8 for three years now and they are still quite. I'm using them in an ambassadeur 5501 left hand reel. Interesting side note, right hand gears will fit in a left hand reel, but as soon as you turn the handle the pressure disengauges the small pinion gear from the spool. Low gears are just so much easier to crank. I believe Daiwa used to make a 3.8 gear ratio reel. I have a couple in the right hand model, but only the one 5501 left hand which I prefer. I have been thinking about the 7001 garcia's, but don't know if I can take the added weight of those reels. This is strickly casting situations. Thanks to all you guys for the help.
