BMac44ca
I have now spent many nights trying to read all the awesome information that is here. I have tons of questions but for right now I am trying to figure out the most economical way to get the basics. Shipping, and the usual govt tack ons at the border drive me crazy. I have a shipping address in the states (mother in law) but I don't get there enough. So..... Are there any Canadian suppliers for plastisol? Who are the other Canadian guys using for product? Is the glitter that is used very specific to this application or can it be found at a place like a craft store? I have made some models from Fimo modelling clay. If I am making a plaster mold will it require a release agent to get the model out? Thanks for any info on this and I will wait a day or two before I bombard the forum with a few more questions. I am only pouring for myself if this helps anyones replies. (Although I am sure some of my buddies will be rifling through my stuff when I am not looking) Bruce McGregor
nova
Welcome Bruce. I live in Canada and I've been pouring for about 10 years. When I started ordering supplies I had them shipped UPS. I soon found out that it was way too exspensive that way. I now have all my supplies shipped via mail. The brokerage fee if $5 CDN for each package plus GST.(no duty) It takes a little longer but it is about $50 cheaper for each order from what UPS will charge you. As far as I know there are no suppliers of plastisol in Canada; wish there was. There are plenty of "mold" posts and tutorials here that will answer your questions. As for the glitter; the glitter in craft shops usually won't work(heat curls them) and if you are using a micro you could have a problem with some of them. Whether you pour for yourself or for sale won't make a difference here. Only attitude. Again; welcome and I hope you have lots of fun with this hobby. Expect to ruin some rubber at first until you get used to it. Check out the sticky at the top for recipies to get yourself going. BMac44ca
Thanks for the information Nova. Do you use just one supplier for your materials? If so which one? I purchased a starter kit from Bass Pro over the winter that had MF supplies in it, but my addictive personality takes over pretty quick and bass season opens in less than 60 days so I am looking to stock a few more items fairly quickly. (I am absolutely wired to catch a nice bass on something I have created myself.) Do you create plaster molds? Can I just get some plaster from a craft store like Michaels? I have created a few molds from silicone as one tutorial instructed but the baits come out looking dull and I think plaster with a sealer will be my next try. Are most people microwaving their plastic? I am just using a hotplate and metal measuring cups in the garage (partly because of smell in the house and partly to allow me a few quiet minutes to myself in the garage). Thanks again, Bruce
