What Size Wire

Recommended Posts

would be best for copying this? I want to make these with 3/4 and 1 oz head into spinnerbaits for stripers. The 1/16" welding wire I am using for through wiring is a bit difficult to bend for kind of stuff like this.

What recommendations do you have for wire size and type for rigidity?

I got some .040 stainless its a little bit hard to bend not bad but I can bend up a spinner harness like the one you have pictured pretty easily... I wanted some bigger heavier ones for some hungry pike on opener for a certain lake... my only thoughts on the matter are instead of twisting the top double loop it instead its easier to do.

Rowingadubay, can you post a picture how you did that? I can twist the shape, but it a SOB twisting it with the jig head in it. I broke two trying and this one was not near perfect as I would like. Their is soldered also in the center which I think I will do. I mean if 42" Striper hits this I am sure the wire will fold open and leave the mono up in the spinner blade. ;) I guess when you pout jigs alone the hacksaw cut just leaves you a a small pin type sprue to trim off also, correct?

This was .04 stainless wire for spinnerbaits from Netcraft and it looks the same size. I think the R bend need to be twisted closed to survive a big fish.

well the important part to me would be the double loop at the top... for .04 wire... if you start getting bigger then that then I would do a twist top... for what your talking you should look into bike spokes...there really tuff to bend but also really tuff for fish to bend as well... only down fall is the wire is so big most hook eyes wont go over it... you would have to rig up something else...

Archeryrob, if you like the ultra minnow jig why not just get the ultra minnow spinnerbait mold? Or ask someone here to pour you some, it is a great spinnerbait but the minnow mold isn't hard to modify with a dremel and some J B weld. The "R" bend is fine for stripers as long as you tie a good knot and the wire you use is stout. .052 wire with an "r" bend will work, if you aren't using wire leader or some sort of snap then you don't need the twisted or closed loop. I don't like a closed loop, I tried using them a long time ago and it costed me what I believe was a bass of at least 8lbs if not more and what happened was my line got caught in the wraps making the loop and it didn't take long for it to break, I also lost a bait after that when the I let the bait sink the line got snagged on the loop and that is why I don't like them.

I bent the closed eye and tried to solder it and guess what! Solder rolls right off Stainless steel! Didn't know that. I guess the bend should be enough.

I have the Ultra minnow mold for 1/2 to 1-1/2 oz heads and I have the other one for up to 3/8 ox for spinner baits already. I don't think I'll need bigger than 1-1/2oz spinner baits. I can see where the line needs to be cut and then I can cast jigs or spinnerbiats in larger sizes. Thanks RollinAdubay! I have some .040 spinner baits wire from Jann's and I will size it for that and try it with the R bend and double a couple over for for the closed loop and test them. If .040 gives me trouble I will upgrade to ,051. I have to buy some 4/0 and 5/0 hooks. Do you use different hooks when cast spinner baits or just bend them to the top or leave the extra eye?

ING, my pics are from photobucket, so maybe they just had a server issue when you where trying to view it.

I see that picture perfectly, but all another -broken.gif "image not available". There is some difference between first picture and others?

Thank you

An update since I have been out fishing. I caught a 24" snakehead on a 1/4 oz spinnerbait with .035 wire. She bent the crap out of it worse than bass about her size ever could. I got it to the kayak and lost it trying to get the Boga in it's mouth and fished where I caught it first and hooked it back up in 3 minutes. Dragged it in the kayak and it flailed so bad it popped the swivle and spinner out of the bent over wire. I had to re-insert the swivel and bent the spinnerbait back to save it, which I thought is was done.

I think the above setup with the jig will allow for a hinge point at the hook eye. After seeing what that snakehead did to the spinnerbait it really made me thing what a large striper would do to one.

I have the style H spinner bait mold en 1 1/2, 2 and 2 1/2 oz. I enlarged it to take 1/16 welding wire. I come straight out and put a prop on the wire. You could also use a cleves and spinner blade Use the same loop at the end as thelure building quys use for a tail loop. I sell them for wahoo and jacks. the wire gets bent but is easy to straighten out. with the R bend it can get a lot more messed up. The style H is a great looking head.
