bodfish
Hey guys, What is your preferred model or prototype carving material? I have been using polycarbonates like lexan but I am looking for something a bit harder (for more detail and better surface polishing). I have experimented with resins but have had trouble with heat distortion and fracturing during the carving and shaping process. Jewellers wax is great for detail but a bit hard to handle and temp sensitive. Your thoughts? bodfish
wchilton
One that I like a lot is hard urethane casting resin. The one I've used is from aeromarineproducts.com. It's a transparent tan color when first mixed and cures to an off-white opaque color in about 5 or ten minutes. It can be polished, but I usually just get it smooth/nonpolished and then dip in clear floorwax for a shiny surface. Keep it sealed up well, it can form bubbles if it absorbs too much water from the air.
