Newbie Having Lam Issues

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys. New here to this site. There is some great info here. I have been having some trouble for a while now with cold cracks on Laminates. I have tried everything I can think of to remedy the problem. I'm shooting some 2" crappie shad stinger type baits. Using Calhouns plastic. Mostly bears baits products, I have tried a jacobs injector and have a bass tackle twinjector. I have been trying to shoot the laminates in two shots to save some plastic. I am shooting bears's molds and they have huge sprues. The sprues hold as much plastic as the baits and using a twin injection keeps You from reusing the sprues for a desired color. They are pretty much trash.

I have been trying the divider plate route doing it in a two step process. I have also been using vegetable oil to keep the baits in on side of the mold when demolding for quicker production. One side of the plate gets the oil. This also creates a skim of oil on one Lam half. I know this oil is not helping with the lam process because it is acting like an anti stick agent. So I made baits like this and then dipped them in clear plastic hoping to seal them up. This has helped but am still getting the problem of separation when I use a jig that has a fairly good size barb keeper on it (only talking 1/16th of an ounce). Looking for any advice I can get. I have tried all I can think of; different injectors, different heat, with oil, without oil. Without oil, the baits stick to both sides and I have to tuck the half tails back into the molds. When I do this and shoot the other color to complete the bait, 99% of the time, the tail is not straight. It is warped and useless. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.CF

Spray the flat plate with pam. Wipe all of it off with a clean rag. If you still have separation issues wipe it off 2x with different clean rags. Don't spray the mold cavity. Your half bait will stay in place.

You are not having problems with the two halves splitting apart after the plastic has cured using the Pam?CF

I can't say it has never happened but for the most part no. I have said in other posts that I have my fist half in the mold on a griddle heated at 250 degrees while I am heating the second color. I don't know if this makes a difference but it works for me.

i wouldnt put anything on the blank half, in my experience it isnt needed and just creates problems.

I have not been using anything on the blank half. Just been using vegetable oil on the side of the plate that I want to stay in the mold. I have tried the cooking spray before but will try it again. Also have heated the molds in a toaster oven while the second color was warming up. Still seemed to have problems. I will go back and try again. I will use Pam on the plate, keep mold warm on the griddle and then after I have made the bait, I will dip in clear plastic. I have some folks that want some of these baits but I will not give them to them if they don't meet my quality standards. I would be PO'd if I bought baits that did that. Thanks for any more suggestions anyone can give.CF

Lets go back to the reason for not using the Twinjector. Lets say the mold total plastic is 1 oz which cost a quarter, so the waste costs 12 cents. You are going through two more steps to save that and the cost of the plastic to dip. Is your time not worth anything? My sugestion is buy a mold that has a smaller sprue, there are tons of those types of mold out there that dont have huge sprues. In the long run it will pay for itself. If you have to have that one ask if the sprue can be smaller when ordered. Then the lamination line wont be a problem. The sprues can be used for other projects too. Sometime you get a great looking color. Frank

I am a newbie and shot my first two color yesterday. Look at my other post it has pic's. Here is how i did mine i have not seen anyone use this process on here or any other forum. My mold is warm I had my second color on a hot plate i used a craft paint brush dip in the blue and made one stroke thru the top. My shad mold has a top and bottom got them mixed on one set and painted the bottom. The brush will wipe off with a rag after you finish the whole mold. If you goof clean that one out and recoat.I think the brush gets better when it gets a little plastic set in it. My blue was dark and with the brush method it lighten as the white is injected in. i tried pouring if you look at the pic's you will see why i changed.Cub48
