cranker
I wanted to inform everyone I ran across a product today called (Jig-a-loo Graphite Extreme) which is a graphite aerosol spray! I have been using drop out like most everyone else here uses but wanted to try this stuff because for me shipping alone is more than the can of drop out. Label says for high temp applications up to 985 deg. and sprays on black and dries very quickly and works like a charm.I tested this stuff on a older do-it mold I had which had been modified and was very hard to get complete pours in,and it worked like a charm! Costed me $1.49 for a 6oz. can at a local hardware store but I also found it online after I started looking into this stuff. Maybe this is something some of you may want to look into trying. This may be something others have already talked about here but I was excited to find a cheaper alternative that actually works and can be easily gotten. cadman
Hey Cranker, I'm all for something cheaper that works. Thanks for the info. Do you have a link where you saw this on the werb???
cranker
Cadman,I bought mine at Home Depot but according to the jig a loo website there are several popular stores that carry it.Their website is jigaloo.com and the product is called Graphite Extreme. I really think it is about the same exact formula as drop out,it looks the same, smells the same and works the same.I coated the old mold with it this morning and it dried in just a couple of minutes and I started pouring and was amazed at what happened, the mold poured out better than ever and I think better than with drop out! I paid $ 1.49 for the 6oz. can. Hopes this helps and I think you will be impressed at the results.I am also all for cheaper and all for buying something local instead of ordering and paying outrageous shipping costs! smalljaw
Just looked at the Home Depot website site and no results for jig-a-loo. Did a search for dry graphite spray and found a product called Fabulous Blaster instead. No clue if its any good as a mold release or not. I checked also and when it wasn't listed on the Home Depot website I called my local store and they told me they used to carry it but no more. I thought it was strange as they are listed on the Jig-a-loo website as a dealer, but I'm going to my ACE hardware store next week to pick up some D2T so I'll see if they have it. cadman
You can add me to the list today. I went to Lowe's, Home Depot and Menards. Home Depot and Menards used to carry it and they stopped for some reason. I too am going to go to Ace Hardware or True Value to see if they have it. If not I'll buy it on-line. Cranker, if they still have some you better buy it, because they will probably stop carrying it. It looks like a really good deal. Thanks for sharing. cranker
Sorry guys,If I had known this stuff was going to suddenly start disappearing from these stores I would not have brought it up.I am wandering why all the sudden people are not carrying it! The stuff works like a charm and after using it I am convinced it is the exact same formula as the Drop Out spray.I will check back locally today and see if I can find more of it and if so I will let you know. Well I was everywhere and the exact same story as cadman, "We used to carry it", even Advanced auto "used" to have it so it appears I need to get it online as well but then with shipping it doesn't make a good deal. I was wondering about another product that Home Depot and Lowes both showed me, it was PB Blaster, high temperature graphite dry lubricant. It cost like $5.50 for a 5oz can but it is still good compared to drop out if it would work. I'm just afraid to try something that I'm going to be pouring molten lead on, I once had a bead of sweat fall into a mold cavity as I began to pour and what happened is something I do not want to repeat so I'm a little leary of trying something like that without knowing if it will work or not. tbrinlee
It appears I posted this in the wrong thread so here it is again... The past week I have been using some graphite mold release spray Blaster 5.5 oz. Graphite Dry Lubrican P/N 8-GS from Home Depot. Sprayed it on, let dry for about 10 minutes and bushed off the excess. High Temp says 850F and the 10, 1.5 oz heads I did all did well. http://www.homedepot...gs#.UBcs8y4bBFk at US$4.27 Tony

Looks like I was truncated. Here it is again... As to the excess comment... My squid jig bill is fairly thin (1/16" thick) and the graphite settled in the bill cavity causing no lead to flow at the tips of the bill. Took be a couple 3-4 tries in order to figure out that it was the graphite clogging the area. I had a very soft bristle brush that I lightly ran over the mold face to out clear any excess graphite off the mold. I would imagine a small paint brush would work as well. This stuff worked like a charm. I have never had my heads release this easily. And after 10 jigs I couldn't see that any of the graphite was missing or worn off. I also used it for making a lite slow fall jig out of alumilite resin. It too released easily and left none of the plastic in the mold cavity. This has been a real problem for me, having to clean the mold after every casting and sometimes it would be stuck in the mold so tight that I would tear the jig head apart getting it released from the mold. I have tried everything from wd40 to wheel bearing grease, pam spray and vegetable oil. Looks like this stuff might be the answer to my problem. Thanks for sharing. tbrinlee
Glad I could help. Thanks for the tip on the alumilite resin. I am curious, were you using an aluminum mold or silicone with the casting resin? I think my squid jigs would be pretty cool as a slow sink top water part. Probably need to get rid of the hook and go back to a wire frame but it should still be pretty cool part. Tony
