mossman
When repainting lures have difficulty covering or masking the molded eyes to have well defined lines around the eyes when done. Taping does not work well for convex shapes. What techniques or recomendations should I try?
nova
Try melting a thin layer of wax over the eye; then trim it to the edges with a razor knife. www.novalures.com
Tim Pennington
Hello I am new here but thought this might help. I have used this on glass eyes when painting fish.http://www.taxidermy.com/cat/08/eyemask.html
mark poulson
I put a small piece of painter's blue masking tape over the eye and press it down with my finger, and then a toothpick, so it follows the contours of the eye, and is down tightly everywhere. Then I use the back of an exacto knife to circle the eye at it's perimeter. That cuts the tape without cutting the lure. Other than having a hole punch the perfect size to cut out tape disks, this is the best method I've come up with.
RayburnGuy
If you have a hole punch with a couple different sizes for holes you can punch circles out of blue painters tape and cover the eyes. Another thing that will work is liquid frisket. It's a liquid masking agent that you can paint over the eye with a brush and it dries in a minute or so. You can find it at hobby shops such as Hobby Lobby or stores that deal in arts and crafts. I've tried both and now I don't try to save the eyes. I just pop them out before painting and glue new ones back in when I'm done. Ben

Richard Prager
I have used Parma Liquid mask #701. It work pretty good and peels right off. Hobby shops carry it. To tell you the truth it is a PIA and a heck of allot easier to just pop the eyes off and replace them with new ones.
mossman
I ended up using Elmers glue over the eyes and then painted. The glue easily came off after drying. Thanks guys for your advice. I was repainting Yo-Zuri's Pin's minnows. An awesome lure for me but getting dificult to find and even more dificult to replicate. This lure is quite small and too precise for me to consistantly make.
Tag
I just paint right over the eyes, but after each coat i take a q-tip with some alchohol and just clean it off.
Hughesy
Most of the time you can get a small pocket knife blade under them and pop them off. Some come off easy, some not so easy. Just stick em back on with a very small amount of super glue gel after painting, then clear over them.
quickdraw
I put my eyes on before I topcoat so they will have at least 2 coats over them and they don't pop off. Right now I'm repainting a swimbait and I use draftsman's masking tape to cover them. It's very flexible and sticks well even around the edges.
