Bucktails And Trailer Hooks.

Recommended Posts

This is some of the stuff I have been working on. Poured the bucktails (4 oz here) and powder coated them super glow white. Still learning the trick to tying especially on the trailer hooks. The trailer hooks go on my fluke balls and they get pretty beat up so I don't care to much. The bucktails with the red chin have mustard black nickle finish 32786. Much sharper and better size than the ones that Do-it tells you to use in the mold.

One question I have right now is which epoxy should I use for the thread? Right now I am using Sally Hanson hard as nails but would like to switch up to epoxy once I get the tying perfected. Also can I go over the hard as nails with epoxy? Might be easier to go over the hard as nails after tying up a bunch of jigs.

They look very good and the wraps look neat and clean. I use D2T as I will tie weedless jigs and then glue the weedguard in after. What I do is when I'm done with the wraps I use a whip finish and that holds very well and when I have a few jigs made I'll mix up some epoxy. The first batch of epoxy is to coat my jig and then do the wraps and once I have them coated with the epoxy I make another small batch of epoxy and glue the weedguards in which you don't have to do. The D2T epoxy on the wraps make the thread appear as one piece like the threads look on the guides of a fishing rod. I don't think it will hurt going over the nail polish with epoxy but do one just to see how it works just in case it doesn't work so you don't mess up a bunch of jigs. I occasionally will tie jigs that use chenile and saddle hackle around the collar and on those I whip finish and then lock the threads in with plain super glue, I never had any problem using super glue and it works with the epoxy final coat. I have some jig pics in the gallery if you want to look.

Thanks for the replies. Small jaw thanks for bringing up the finish wrap. Had to google it and spent 20 minutes learning it on a 4 oz bucktail. Not easy to do. I was just doing the half hitches and I would coat with SH otherwise the half hitshes would come undone if handled too much. Now I can just tie a bunch up and use the epoxy if I decide too. I have not had a chance to fish my bucktails yet to see how well the SH holds up. I will wait before I use the epoxy.

Makokeith, do yourself a favor and get a whip finish tool, I have a one that works well but I have to watch when I do 3/8oz jigs as it isn't designed for bigger stuff but they do make ones that have extended reach for the bucktails that you are doing. While doing a whip finish by hand is ok I prefer the tool as it makes it a bit easier but some like doing the hand method. Check out youtube for videos before you go that route, see if it maybe something you may want to get if you are going to be doing a lot of these.

Whip finish and epoxy for durability. Not so much for the thread but for the eyes. You did not mention curing the powder paint. If you are not doing this the paint will fail before your threads. Looks good. I use vinyl paints most of the time. Paint, add eyes, clear coat, then tie. Followed by Sally Hansons for the threads. When using powder I go paint, cure, tie, eyes, followed by epoxy for eyes and thread. That is just a way that works for me.Keep up the good work.
