Football Jig Mold

Recommended Posts

If the hook exist doesnt it make sense there is a mold that uses it? Thanks, Scott

Scott,

No, guys make custom molds all the time with special hooks that they like. So as you can see if you want a jig that a jig maker made, and you have to have it because " it's the only jig that works for you". Then you have two options. #1 Keep buying them from him, or modify a mold to use the hook he has. If you use a lot of these football heads with those hooks then it would be worth your while to mod a mold. If you use a dozen jigs or so a year. It's cheaper to keep buying them from him. The cost of making them yourself many times does not outweigh the cost of buying them. Many guys make custom molds for this reason. So the jigs are different and if they happen to catch on, they're the only game in town selling them. Honestly I would look for a differnt hook and call it a day. Fishing to me is 95% about presentation and trying to find where the fish are. The other 5% is luck and color. Just my 2 cents worth.

I understand what your saying and thank you. Gammy and Mustad both make this hook. That being said I just assumed there must be a mold for it. Thanks again, Scott

Cedar 1, I know it is strange that manufacturers make jig hooks when there isn't a commerical mold for them but the reason they are made is because of the question you just asked. That hook is being used by a company or a person who has a lot of money because in order to have a hook made to your specs you need to order a whole lot of them. Well when I asked the question to a distributor I was told that some lure making companies will have a hook made and they will not make it a proprietary hook meaning the company can sell the hooks to anybody that wants them. So what you end up with is you look at jig hooks and you will see all kinds of configurations, about 90% are made to fit a Do-it mold but there are some that have no known mold. The Mustad 38108 and 38109, these are 45 degree hooks with flat eyes and are not inended for any molds that we can buy but it just so happens the EWG bend allows them to be used in most molds that use a 60 degree flat eye, the exception is the 38108 has a thicker wire diameter and only the 3/0 size would fit in the molds. The Mustad 32796 isn't made for any molds, most molds call for the 32798, the other one uses thicker wire so to use it you need to modify the mold. I can go on as there are a good many more jig hooks that are made with no mold that they are supposed to fit.

I fish a lot of finesse jigs, but I wanted a bigger hook than the 1/0 and 2/0 it was designed for.

I bought a Do It football jig mold, the FBB 38, and easily modified it to take the heavier wire Mustad 3/0 and 4/0 hooks, using a small triangular file for the hook shank, and a drill press with a small bit locked at the proper height to enlarge the hook eye area.

I gave the mold and hooks to my fishing partner, who pours, and he made a bunch of the jigs, which came out perfect. He pours with a ladle.
