markw
I'm making up a batch of musky sized spinnerbaits for a few freinds. I'm using #8 painted blades. I'm trying to find a way to put the split rings on the blades without scratching the paint off but I'm failing miserably. Does anyone hav any tricks or tips? I typically don't have a problem with the lighter basss-sized split rings, but the larger ones I'm using (4's or 5's) are pretty tough and scratch while I'm sliding them on. mark
Basseducer
You might need a pair of split ring pliers with a bigger jaw. If you're not using split ring pliers you really should.
Fatman
Try butt rings with a touch of solder on them.
Musky Glenn
Even if you get them on with out scratching them it won't last. The split ring will wear the paint off just from the wear effect on the edges of the hole. Just my two cents worth. Musky Glenn
ING
Try to use foil from can to insulate pass for split ring.
Musky Glenn
To help keep loose items to a minimum, I only use no. 2 ball bearing swivels for holding blades on spinner baits. This creates a problem with the larger musky size blades as there isn't much clearance room inside the small split ring for the blade and swivel to by pass. Having to open a no.2 up enough to go over the large blade often bends the small split ring. To cure this I often use two split rings, with a larger one going on the blade and the smaller one from the swivel going onto this larger split ring. This way I end up with the swivel, small split ring, large split ring, blade. Musky Glenn
tbrinlee
How about a spray enamel or epoxy top coat?
ddl
i just use a good pair of split ring pliers and the paint stay on the blade, but if you have bad quality painted blades they will chip whatever you do.bigger size can also help you a lot
Braided Line
I wouldn`t let that bother you. "Nice" looks good but for a short time. If it is a problem.... touch the blade up after the split ring is installed. Like someone else said, that`s a wear point.
