barrysbaits
I read on Wikipedia that Wright and Mcgill manufactures Eagle Claw hooks. Is this a fact? Or maybe it's just common knowledge that I was unaware of. I bought the Skeet Reese bait cast reel made by Wright and Mcgill. What a disappointment that was. It left almost everything to be desired. smalljaw
Yes, Wright and McGill do make Eagle Claw hooks. You may also be unaware that they have a new "Black Platinum" series of hooks for jigs that are fantastic, they are making direct replacements for Mustad hooks that are being made with more and more quality issues. barrysbaits
Thats interesting. Im glad to see that an american company is stepping up to the plate. I use eagle claw l255 almost exclusivley on my spinnerbaits. Unless the customer requests otherwise. I noticed Captain hooks carries an Eagle claw E608 spinnerbait hook. Does anyone have any first hand experience with these hooks The description reads the same as it does for the EC253. I know the EC253 has a shorter shank than the ECl255. I was only aware of these two types of SB hooks being manufactured by Eagle Claw. Any info on the E608 would be appreciated. Barry
cadman
Like smalljaw mentioned, yes Wright and McGill is Eagle Claw, and they have been like that forever. I will vouch for the new breed of hooks the Black Pearl (Platinum) series are excellent hooks. Also Trokar is made by Eagle Claw. Finally, not to take away anything from Wright and McGill, but they are hook makers and not makers of rods and reels. I personally saw their rods and reels and not happy with the quality of what I saw. Now guys don't get all bent out of shape, this is just my opinion. If you like the Skeet Reese rods and reels then more power to you.
JSC
Wright & McGill for years were strictly hook Mfgs. Thru the years they have added to their line ... I think Rods were the first thing they made outside of hooks .. now they have a whole division of misc. tackle. Back in the old days their domestic rods were great. X2 on the new hooks. smalljaw
Barry, the next time you buy spinnerbait hooks, get the EL255BP, it is the same 255 hook you use now only in the black platinum series. Cadman and I refer to different terminology for these hooks but we are talking about the same hook. When they first came out they were improved hooks with a black pearl finish and they were called the black pearl series, the first hook I got in the series was the EL111BP EWG jig hook, I made a few jigs, 2 for myself and the others I sent free to customers as a thank you and also a test, I told one guy who insist on gamakatsu hooks only to try it out as it was a new gamakatsu hook that is only coming out in a month. Wel hee wanted all of his jigs made with that hook until I told him it was an Eagle Claw hook. Anglers are funny in how brand loyal we become even when we see with our own eyes an item for less money is just as good and this is the case with a lot of people. Fortunately I've been making spinnerbaits and jigs for a really long time and so I have spent countless hours with all brands of hooks and used them on the water and I can tell you this new Black platinum series or the original black pearl series if you prefer, is a fantastic hook for the price, I'll put them up against Mustad any day of the week except for the Mustad 91768 and the 38109, I haven't found hooks to replace those as they are as good as a hook gets.
