FishnFreak
Hello to everyone here on the forum! I'm a newbie to lure making and new to the TU sight. I have loved everything I've learned so far. Thank you for your thoughts and input that helps to stear us beginners. I have made a few POP molds, a few fiberglass resin molds and about 5 or 6 silicone RTV molds. I've had a blast and learned a TON and expect that learning curve to continue. I have yet to purchase virgin plastisol but I know you can remelt old soft plastics and pour that plastisol. I know this has to have its downside. Is the plastisol less reliable after its been re-poured? If hardener was added when it was originally made, does the "new pour" with the recycled plastisol turn out a little harder than normal? What steps or precautions do I need to take before remelting and pouring some of the discarded soft plastics I have laying around? Thanks again! Jig Man
I do quite a few remelts. I have found that heat stabilizer is a must for me. I cut them up in small chunks and remelt in shop the microwave with 30 second cycles, stirring a bunch between cycles. If you don't remelt like colors you will wind up with brown. FishnFreak
Thanks for the input Jig Man. I definitely made a solid brown the other day by mixing too many colors... Its all about learning! I'm having a blast though. Where do you buy your heat stabilizer?
Jig Man
I got my last bottle at Bear's along with a bunch of other stuff a year or two ago.
finesse1331
Just thought you should know, I know there are a few brands of worms you don't want to remelt,if I'm not mistaken Berkley is one of them, I don't know what it is about them but they smell horrible when you melt them. I know there are a few others but can't remember the brand, hopefully someone will chime in that knows. Good luck on your new addictive hobby. MonteSS
Remelted baits also usually pop and cracle from the moisture in them. As said, short heat cycles and lots of stirring. ...Bill

FishnFreak
Guys thank y'all very much. JSC help me out - what do you mean by high lites? Is it some sort of additive for plastisol?
finesse1331
Hi lites are a powder additive that give the plastic a pearl like sheen to it, I add hi lutes to almost every thing I pour. I'm addicted to hi lites. They are great to add to a certain color to give it a different sort of appearance.

FishnFreak
Awesome! I appreciate the tip. I'll be chacking that out. I assume you can get that from Bear's website?
finesse1331
Yeah you can get them from Bears or Lurecraft. There are a few sites with classified adds where people sell stuff they don't use or are getting out of the business, you can find molds, glitter,hi lites.
