mark poulson
I need some help. How do I modify a single blade buzzbait so it won't roll at higher speeds? I've tried bending the lure wire so the bait part runs deeper, to act as more of keel. That works on double buzzers, but not on singles. Any suggestions? smalljaw
What brand buzzbait or is it a homemade one? The reason it makes a difference is I see a lot of homemade ones that use to small of a diameter wire and if the wire diameter is to thin there isn't a lot you can do about it. If the wire is ok then look to see what side the bait is listing to and then grab the bait with the head in one hand and the wire in the other. Take the hand that is holding the head and hold it steady and take the wire and twist it to the opposite side of the list. Don't bend the wire sideways, instead you want to twist it or tilt the wire as if you werescrewing the wire into the head if that makes sense as I can't find the right words to explain it. The reaon the wire diameter has to be bigger on buzzbaits is because the blade churnning through the water create a lot of torque, a lot more than what a spinnerbait generates. A good spinnerbait will vibrate in the water and call fish but a vibrating buzzbait doesn't have the same effect as it is on the surface and the churnning blades do all the calling and if the wire vibrates excessively it hurts the blade on the surface by lowering the sound and making the bait list to far to the side making it possible for a fish to miss the bait much more than normal. mark poulson
smalljaw, Thanks for the quick response. These are storebought baits, so the wire is stout. I'll try your method this weekend.
Braided Line
Some Buzz baits just don`t like Hi-Speeds.
RayburnGuy
I have to agree with Braided Line. I've had some buzz baits that wouldn't track true at higher speeds no matter what you did to them. Ben

Ben That is also true, a lot of them like the old Strike King 3 winged blade was terrible going slightly faster than a moderate retrieve but the same blade was totally different and was able to go super fast with no problems when they began making it out of plastic. Musky Glenn
A heavier head will help it stay up right. But, then you need to buy it heavier to start with. Musky Glenn

The buzzbait I have that rolls is an old Strike King 3 winged blade model! Maybe the three winged blade is too heavy for the head. I think I'll try wrapping some lead wire right behind the head, and see if that helps.
Saugerman
Sometimes ,you can try putting a split shot on. behind the head, just to see if that's your problem.needing more weight.

Anyway, when they came out it was because everyone was trying to mimic Rick Clunn because he was killing fish on a buzzbait at the time and he said the secret was to go as slow as you can while still keeping it on top. Every since comanies have been designing buzzers that can stay on top when going slow, Strike King came out with the aluminum 3 winged blade and it made it so you could crawl it on top, the downside was going any faster than moderate speeds caused the bait to roll, I'm not sure if the extra weight will help but if you want to weight to do anything for you try adding it to the head, or on the hook clost to the head. Do-it molds figured this out which is why they now make a mold with a keel, that keel lets you use big blades to make the bait slow and stable but it won't be able to tip the head over going fast unless you really oversize the blade. Good luck and let us know how you make out.
