Lite Wire Weighted Hooks

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a light wire weighted offset hook, 1/0-5/0, for smaller plastic swimbaits.

Does anyone know if there is something like this that's sold commercially, or is there a mold available for pouring my own?

Ideally, someone sells them, or I'll find a mold that will let me pour around Mustad Megabite lite wire offset hooks. They have a really deep bite, and are strong and sharp, but the fine wire makes setting the hook on lighter line possible.

Mark, I have made a lot of weighted hooks using the Do-It lure body mold. I have had to do a little Dremmeling on it to get the hooks to fit. I think this is the most useful and versatile mold that I have ever owned. It just might be what you are looking for.

Mark, what weight are you looking for on the hooks? I modified a finess drop shot mold to take the mega-lite and the mega-bite hooks. If you send me the hooks/pay shipping, I'll pour them up for you at no cost if you aren't needing a ton of them for your personal fishing. They really just take a second to pour up.

That's if you are interested and I have the right size of weight you want.

I want 1/16 and 1/8oz mostly.

Do you have that mold?

If you just want to "try" something why not pick up a pack of rubber cores and take the rubber core out, then glue or smash the weight on the hook. If it works ok then worry about finding a better way...

Bob,

I do that now, or split one side of small egg sinker and pinch them onto the hook shank, and they both work.

But that is big and bulky, and I'm hoping to find a slimmer, smoother setup.

I'm sorry to pick BOB but your advise is W-A-Y off base.

The balance of swim-baits w/ the proper ,weighted hook is very important and paramount for sucess. They must run straight and drop vertically w/out rolling over-maintaining an upright position of the hook.. Rubber core sinkers are snag masters and smashing the weight on the hook will cause an off-balance ,loose swim-bait hook that will not perform properly w/ consistent ''roof of the mouth" hook sets.Sometimes you have to spend the $ for a custom CNC lead mold to get good performance.

Without results ,there is no economy -no matter what the price

Throw money! Wll fix! LOL.

Good sarcastic answer there Bob. :censored: I've spent years developing swim-baits and testing various weighted heads until they work for a variety of conditions. Is it possible any product costing more the $1.00 per 100 would probaly offend you?-sarcasim intended. There's a free education out there waiting for you to read-all you have to do is click-on it-WOW -didn't cost a dime. Free- Free-Free!!!!!

You mentioned before about your various CNC machines- do you really know how to use them for basic and intracate lead and plastic injection molds?

Lead molded onto an offset hook( such as shown in a previous post) requires you to re-tie each and every time you need to rig a new swim-bait.There's a variety of weighted swim-bait heads available today- you just have to be willing to pay for them! :oooh:

Well, to get back on topic instead of slinging mud...

The man wants an option for an application that he wants a specific hook for. I've taken a production Do-It mold and have simply modified it to do just what he wants. I'll let him try it out for free, all he has to do is send me some hooks. Then he can decide if he wants to buy a new mold and modify it himself to get the same mold for himself to pour with. Simple deal. Lets not get bent out of shape over it guys. We are here to help each other.

Mark, the mold has 1/16th and 1/8th sizes. My email is eisenbacher at sbcglobal.net if you want to get some hooks to me. If they are what you want, I'll be glad to send you some pics of the modifications I've done and how I've done it.

Shoot, Mark I totally forgot about the weighted hook jig mold. This is just what you need, the SMB-4S-EWG model. This came out after I had already modified the finesse dropshot mold to do the same thing. I don't have this mold but I'm sure it will work with a little modifying if not right out of the package. Get it through Zeiner's: http://www.zeiners.com/doit/weighted_hook_jig_mold.html I have the other mold that takes the 91768 Mustad hook. Works great.

Guys,

I didn't mean to start a shooting war.

I really appreciate all the help, input, and offers of help.

I like the Mustad 37177NP-BN hooks, their Megabite Lite Wire EWG hooks. They have a really deep bite, so even the smaller sizes work with thicker plastics, and the lite wire lets me fish them on 8lb fluoro and still get a good hook set.

I think the mold on Zeiner's is for a heavier wire hook, which is already available commercially.

I think making a mold with bondo first is the way to go, even if it doesn't hold up too long.

I am only making them for myself and my fishing partner, so quantity isn't a big issue.

I'll give it a try, and let you guys know how it turns out.
