Best Size Hooks For The Poison Tail

Recommended Posts

New to jig pouring. I’m thinking of getting the 2 Poison Tail molds. How big of a hook can you or would you go. I’ve seen some of the answers on here searching the forum, but didn't cover all. What size hooks do you guys use for each? Going to use the Mustad 91768 hook.

1/8 Recommends 1/0

1/4 Recommends 2/0

3/8 Recommends 3/0

1/2 Recommends 3/0

3/4 Recommends 4/0

1 Recommends 5/0

Skimpy,

To add to what Jig Man stated you can usually go up one hook size and down one hook size per cavity as a general rule.

Also if you are looking for good mold prices, check out zeiner's out of Wichita Kansas. They have always had the best prices on the i-net. Call if you don't see something on their site and speak to Jim Zeiner.

If you are going to buy molds, get yourself some mold release, it is worth it's weight in gold.

Finally read all the safety tips in the pinned posts in the forum, and if you would like some tutorials on how to powder paint or make a fluid bed. PM me your e-mail and I can ge that out to you...................Good Luck, stay safe and have fun.

I will echo what Cadman said, up or down a hook size is the norm. I just ordered my 3rd mold from Zeiners Bass Shop in Wichita KS, they not only have the best prices but the service for a smnall shop is incredible. I ordered a mold they didn't have but it was coming in the following thursady, well the mold came in on Thirsady morning and they packed ip and shipped it that I got in Saturday via priority mail and no added expense. I'm now a regular customer and if you go there you'll end up that way too. Good luck with the poison tails, thay are an excellent jig and very versatile.

Has anyone tried a 3/0 on the 1/8 ?

If possible I'd like to do the following

1/8 = 3/0

1/4 = 3/0

3/8 = 4/0 or 5/0

1/2 = 4/0 or 5/0

3/4 = 5/0

1 = 5/0

Now mind you my molds are about 4 years old so they may be a little worn from usage, so some hooks may fit easier in my molds than a brand new mold, but here are my answers

1/8 = 3/0 Mine fits however the hook shank by the eyelet side is very close to the cavity wall. So you may have to bend the hook shank a little in, so you get more clearance for lead to pour in there.

1/4 = 3/0 Yes

3/8 = 4/0 or 5/0 4/0 Yes........5/0 Maybe

1/2 = 4/0 or 5/0 4/0 and 5/0 Yes

3/4 = 5/0 Yes

1 = 5/0 Yes

My 1/8oz cavity will not work with a 3/0, it works with 1/0 and 2/0 but the 3/0 doesn't let the lead come all the way down the collar. I will tell you something though, the poison tail is a well balanced jig and it performs well but be careful with hook sizes, I say this because I know my 3/8oz with a 5/0 doesn't fall right and gets hung up in cover as a result, now the 1/8oz with a 2/0 is fine, the 1/4oz with a 3/0 is fine just watch and with the design of the 91768 hook I don't thing you really benefit from a longer shank and wider bite on smaller sizes as my 1/8oz finess jigs are killer with the 1/0 hook, I very very seldom lose a fish hooked on that jig.
