samgann93
New to the site! Ive been making jigs for about a year now and have begun making spinnerbaits. Looking to buy a powder paint gun and this is the one im looking at... http://www.luremaking.com/catalogue/catalogue-index/catalogue-items/tools/powder_paint_air_brush.htm Any reviews on it? Is it worth it to get one of the 50 dollar powder paint spray guns like the TJ's tackle gun? Also i have a question as far as the compressor goes. I was going to buy a cheapo from my local harbor frieght but not sure if i have to have a specific one for this gun. I know it only requires 5-10psi. Can anyone recomend a cheap compressor that they have had success with? Thanks everyone and ill definetly be posting pics when im done! Richard Prager
I use the HB 1/5hp compressor. the one that comes with the airbrush. I love it and is quiet. Are wanting it to paint blades?
samgann93
Blades but mainly the spinnerbait head. I will be doing multicolored heads.
smalljaw
I have mine for years, I love it but you need to remember that you aren't going to make fine lines with it. Look for some of my spinnerbaits in the gallery, it will give you an idea of what you can do with it. I like the ease of blending colors and the fading effects you can get but if you're looing for detail it isn't for you. If you have anymore questions or want to see more baits done with it let me know.
gonfishn
Samgann93 and Cadman, etc.. Had a friend ask for a recommendation re the air brush, etc., he's looking at the one TJ offers with the 5 jars I think it's running like $47 or so. This would mean he'd need the compressor and I mentioned the one from Harbor Freight, not sure which one though as I see they have 1/5hp and 1/8hp, which one would you recommend? Or should I tell him to get the whole kit from HB and then buy extra jars and if so, where do you get them? Does he need to get extra tips? Do you use a heat gun or a torch to pre-heat? On a three color SB paint job, say an all white base coat and then a half coat of chartreuse and a splotch of red, I take it that it's painted in that order? He's also looking at getting TJ's fluid bed, the 3" with the adapter as well for smaller cups. He does a lot of jigs and a whole heck of lot of spinner baits. I guess you're wondering now if he's done so many spinnerbaits, and he has, thousands of them, WHY IS HE ASKING ABOUT POWDER? Well, he's an old timer, set in his ways, who has been finally won over to the 2000's :-) In the past he's painted with two-part epoxy paint and then moved up to vinyl paint, etc. He gets a lot of stuff from Worth and CS Coatings presently so he's already tied in with the wholesalers. I know how to build home made fluid beds using paper filter mediums and he's leaning that way but I still think the pourus plasti board is the best way to go (personally)? Richard Prager
I would use a fluid bed for the base coat and then "tap" the different colors on with a brush. No waste and comes out great I used "cadman's" method and easily do 4-5 different colors that way. One brush is allot cheaper.
samgann93
I picked up the harbor freight 1/8hp airbrush from harbor freight today. Im not looking to do too much detail. I may pickup airbrushing in the future for crankbaits so i figured it could have 2 uses. Not sure which powder paint gun ill go with. Is there a big difference between... http://www.luremaking.com/catalogue/catalogue-index/catalogue-items/tools/powder_paint_air_brush.htm which is 30 dollars vs http://www.tjstackle.com/ which is 45 Thanks guys. smalljaw
TJs has the extra jars and the shipping will be easier, I bought a fluid bed off of him and it works fantastic and I have it for a few years. Gonfishin, I'll be happy to help you and your friend out but make a new thread, don't hijack this one.
