ipt
obviously every plastic is going to be different by brand but i am wondering if you bought a bunch of medium plastic, how much softener would it take to turn it into "soft" plastic and how much hardener to turn it into "hard or strong" plastic? i've heard for softener its about 1oz softener to 8oz plastic. is this accurate? Jig Man
I don't know about softner as I don't use it. I have used hardner and it only takes an itty bit to make the baits too hard so I quit using it also.
Bass-Boys
like you said, it will all vary by brand. So each brand of Medium will be just a touch different in firmness. so each brand will need a touch different amount of softner and hardner to get what you want. you will have to play with it. its a personal opinion on how soft it should be. Also when i called a company a few years back to ask the same question .but wanted to change there medium to match there soft ( same brand ) I was told that there is more to it than just adding softner and or hardner each stiffness has its own recipe. carolinamike
Bass-Boys is right, you can use softener and soften down your plastisol ok, but when it comes to a harder plastisol there is alot more in it than just hardener, for instence, there is a material that makes the harder plastic flow better and there are also different heat stabilizers and things like that. ipt
seems like its a common thing to buy a bunch of medium and then using softener to achieve your soft baits for drop shot worms, etc. so what would be the difference if i shot some DS worms with soft plastic versus medium + softener? carolinamike
ipt, it all comes down to personal preference. If you find a soft plastic that you are satisfied with, then thats the way to go. Some people prefer it softer than medium, but not quite as soft as soft (that is one reason why people mix their own.)
Bassinfool
I mix my own plastisol once I receive the jugs into one main jug that is divided about 70% soft to 30% medium. I mostly make drop shot worms, 7" worms and assorted craws and flipping baits. This ratio, for me, allows my baits to be soft while still holding up reasonably well to damage. Plus, because I want a ton of action without much stiffness using a higher ratio allows of soft allows me to achieve the desired action without being overly flimsy.
