Slammingjack
All I want to do is go from a 1/8 oz round head to a 1/4 oz without going to a bigger hook. Can this be done in a do-it mold? or is there some other mold maker? Is there some other way to do it that I don't know about? Thank you for your time. PeteZipczech
most times you can use a hook one size smaller or larger than the hook they recommend. Which particular mold and hook size are you talking about?
cadman
Yes, Do-It molds usually can accept a one size over or one size under hook in most of their cavities. Since the 1/8 and the 1/4 are probably cavities sitting next to each other in the mold you should not have any problems. What mold are you looking at and what hook do you want to put in the 1/4 oz cavity. I f I have the mold I can check it for you.
Slammingjack
The Do-it mold I'm looking at is a RHB-7-A. Hook not so sure about .I'll be fishing in saltwater. I'm looking at the Matzuo 9064. like the price, not sure about how good it is. Eagle Claw 635 same like the price not sure about the hook. I use owners red circle hooks with cut or live bait and are happy with them. Oh yeah the hook size is #2. If you know a good hook at a good price that don't rust after one use, I'm all ears or all eyes lol. Thank you for your time.
cadman
A #2 will fit in the 1/4 oz cavity. As far as a hook goes The 635 is too thick of a hook to fit in that mold unless you modify the mold. The hook I recommend is Mustad 32746BLN hook. It is an Ultra-Point with a black nickel finish. Eagle Claw might have a similar hook in there black platinum series, and they are usually less costly. I don't know the number off hand on the EC's Edited February 7, 2013 by cadman

smalljaw
Thanks for your help that mustad looks like a good hook The Eagle Claw hook Cadman is referring to is the L570BP, Captain Hooks has it listed as the direct replacement for the Mustad 32746. The difference with the Eagle Claw EL570BP and the normal 570 is not only the black platinum finish but it is also the laser sharp series and it is an awesome jig hook for those small size #8 to #1, I use the #1 and #2 is small 3/32oz hair jigs and I was a firm believer I could not get a better hook for the money when it came to Mustads but the new BP Eagle claw hooks are fantastic. PeteZipczech
The 32746BLN is a fine hook for the money... I also believe that the Gamakatsu 604 or Owner 5318 match up well to those hooks.
Ogajiga
SJ, dunno what area salt water fishing you'll be doing, but I can say from experience that for tropical species light wire hooks, which includes 9064, 32746, 570, 5318, are not a good choice. Perhaps as a starting point you could get a mold like the Do-it JRS-7-48 which 1/4 oz. head specifies a 1/0 635 so MIGHT also fit a #1. The JRS-5-A combo mold specifies 1/4 2/0 fit so might be harder to downsize as much as you want. Sorry I can't be more specific about the JRS mold hook fits because I use RHB molds modified for heavier wire hooks.
