Senkosam
Is the melting point for latex too low for making worm molds? A local craft store sells a 16 oz. bottle of liquid latex for $10. Sam
redg8r
Hi Sam, The problem with latex is that it only cures properly in thin coats. So in order to get a mold suitable for pouring plastisol would require many many coats of latex to build it up. if you put too thick of a coat on, the top will skin over & the inside wont cure for weeks. the price you mentioned ($10 per pound) is similar in cost to RTV silicone. Take a look at Smoothon.com for "Oomoo 25" its 2.8 pounds for $22 & cures in an hour or so. You could also do resin for molds, Ive used & still use Bondo fiberglass resin. Some guys prefer plaster of paris, & Durhams water putty. Those are the most economical for guys startin out. Good luck with your craft. Senkosam
Thanks Red, I already got the plaster and Mod Podge and will attempt my first 2 part mold later this week. Sam
redg8r
Sweet, Well if all goes well with the plaster, upgrading to RTV will give you a more durable mold & using it is similar in fasion as pouring plaster. Kidlizard uses alot of Plaster & looks like he does well with it, if you have any issues, maybe send him a private message & he could help, if need be. Good luck Sam
basskat
I've made about 12 plaster molds with no problems. I always put a thin coat of mineral oil about every four or five pours to prevent sticking. I only pour one peice molds, although I have several 2 peice injection molds. I can't tell they catch anymore fish than the one peice molds. Later......kat
