Murphy's law
I have made several jerk baits and want them to have more side to side action. I am looking to make some cut outs on the side of the lures ( don't know the terminology sorry) the lake fork shad has very square cut outs, the Sebille magic swimmer has angled cut outs and one other bait (forgive me) the banjo minnow has rounded cut outs, do you have any knowledge to each of these cut outs doing a specific thing as far as movement. In the end I just want to steadily retrieve the lure and have a little tail whip as it swims. I have plenty of hard plastic copies what do you suggest I try first. carolinamike
It seems like to me if the tail sections protrude out a little further than the body on each side, it should give you the action that you're looking for. I'm not sure if any of the baits you mentioned above do this but if you're looking for more side to side action just with a straight retrieval it seems like that would be the way to go. It probably won't take much protrusion but a little should bring on a lot of action. But then again, it's according to how soft your plastic is. rhahn427
Many many moons ago I used some small sassy shads for fishing. Back then the plastic didn't seem to be very consistent. 1 tail would wiggle like crazy and the next was almost dead. I learned quickly to open a pack and hold the lure upside down ....... if the tail almost doubled over, I would buy the pack and catch fish when others weren't. The plastic in these packs were a little softer and gave more action ......... Try softening the plastic first ......... you might be surprised ........... fyi ...... Larry Dalhberg's Mr Wiggley uses a VERY soft plastic .... that's how he gets the action
MonteSS
Sounds to me like you want a swim bait and not a jerk bait. A swim bait with a paddle tail will swim straight on steady retrieve with its tail wagging. A jerk bait is twitched, and darts back and forth and up and down erratically. Thats why I like the Caney Wutzit that has no tail to stablize it ...Bill
carolinamike
The type of bait that he is talking about, that Lake fork makes, is segmated and swims on retreaval without a swimbait tail. Bill, wouldn't that be Do-It's wutzit? Since Caney no longer exists.

Correct Mike I consider the LFT a swimbait and not a jerkbait since it "swims" ....Bill
