jig head
I recently took apart a few of my spinning reels that were a mess, and cleaned them up. I was just wondering what you guys use to clean up all that grease. I just used dish soap, i know there has to be a better way.
Mattman
Many use solvents to get rid of all the old grease in the reel case. Parts washing fluid, carb cleaner, brake and electrical contact cleaner... Be careful though, some solvents will attack some plastics. I just wipe mine out with a paper towel and a Q-tip and then relube them. You should not however mix greases. Your first cleaning from factory condition should be a good one. From then on stick with the same grease and oil every cleaning and all you'll need to do is wipe the majority of the old out and replace it with new. basskat
There's several things you can use. WD-40 or carb cleaner is one of the best. I don't use grease in any of my reels. One of the first things I do with a new reel is clean the grease out. I do use a little dab on the worm gear. Oil is the only thing I use inside the reel. Your reel will cast further and be smoother without the grease. I clean all the grease out of the bearings also. Again all I use is oil. Just a note, the "Hot Sauce" oil is some gooood stuff. The only drawback of no grease, you have to oil on a regular basis. Don't over-oil.Take one of your reels and try it. You'll see a big difference.
