Saugerman
I recently bought an old injection mold ,from a company that was in business in the 70's.It appears to be made of aluminum, that has dulled pretty badly. When I shoot it, it makes a dull worm. I sprayed oil on it before shooting it ,and it helps but before long they are dull again. What would be the best way to shine this old mold up? Other than the dullness it makes a great bait.
tupong
Maybe polish it up with a little buffing wheel on a dremel with some cutting compond ?
carolinamike
tupong is exactly right, your mold needs re-polishing. The shinyer the mold the shinyer the bait.
Saugerman
That's kinda what I was thinking, It will be a pretty good job, it has 6 cavities. and sand blasting would probably hurt the mold.
carolinamike
You definatly DO NOT want to sandblast it, and only polish the cavities. That way there is less chance for error.
Jig Man
For really good polishing I use Semi Chrome. I put it on 1/2 of a Q tip in a Dremel.
Saugerman
Thanks for the replies, I will try the semi chrome. Have been working on it with some old polish that Iv'e had for a while. It is coming around ,but I think if I had some good polish it would do better.
JSC
I am thinking that you have one of the "Sand Cast" Molds from back in those days. Dont know if you can really polish it up ... Could You post a pix of it ????
Smallie
The polishing compound mentioned above is Simichrome. Mothers aluminum mag wheel polish or Flitz are two others that would work.
Saugerman
Jsc, the mold looks to be aluminum, If I can borrow a descent camera, and can figure out how to post a picture, I will try to put a picture on the forum, It has cleaned up some already, but I have not had a lot of time to work on it. Thanks again for everyones response.
Smallie
If it is sand cast, the cavities will look like the cavity in a Do-It mold.
