Slammingjack
I still new to this whole bait making thing. Started saying I was only going to spend like $200 bucks on this hobby... Now after going over $500 lol and still wanting more. I have made like 30 batchs with diff. colors and flake. If I was smart I would just go to the bait store and ask "hey what's your biggest seller" and copy it. But I want to do my own stuff as far as color and flake goes. Messed up a lot of what I have tried to do.Too much flake, too little, color too dark or too light. Well anyway. I did notice that I use a lot of Silver .015 flake more then 2 times that of the other flake I have. So i guess what I'm asking do you guys have a flake and size that you use a lot more of? Also do you have a colorant that IYO is good enough by itself without any bling to catch fish?
MonteSS
Most popular colors customers buy are Green pumpkin with .040 black flake Watermelon with 015 red flake Black with 040 blue flake These three colors will catch fish anywhere. ...Bill Edited April 5, 2013 by MonteSS
patrick reif
greenpumpkin with med. black flake for small and medium sized chunks. greenpumkin with gold flake for sticks. My green pumpkin is a mix of Dels GP, olive drab, brown and black. If you add blue flake, also add a couple drops of red colorant. The blue flake will take a beautiful GP, and turn it to watermelon. The red adds the brown tint back. Natural shad(1/4 tsp pearl powder and 4-6 drops black colorant per 1 cup) and a moderate heavy pinch of medium silver flake for grubs, flukes and swimbaits. White or pearl white would follow closely behind for these baits as well. Black for worms or big chunks. I keep a Spike-It pen handy to add chartreuse highlights if "needed". My advise to a newer pourer is to take the three colors you use the most for your fishing and learn them to the point that you no longer have to measure every component, and expand from there. It's also important to early on squash the idea of building the next huge bait empire. Just have fun with the hobby and enjoy the ride. Don't worry about modest mistakes. If a chunk doesn't fully form in your mold, throw it on a jig and fish it anyway. The fish really don't care...they're just hungry. edited to add; For lighter colors such as natural shad, I find it best to add the flake to the un-tinted plastisol before I add colorant. This helps insure that the flake isn't added to heavily Edited April 5, 2013 by patrick reif

DaBehr
I agree with Bill...and so do the baits in my tackle boxes! I like to add a little bit of black string glitter to almost all baits....only because I think it looks cool!
Bassinfool
If I had to choose my biggest fish catchers with flake it would have to be watermelon red, green pumpkin variants, and junebug variants. My favorite color without flake will take some extra work because its a laminate but I seem to catch more fish throwing my key lime pie color than anything else at different points in the year.
