Two Piece Hollow Bait. Help

Recommended Posts

Hello guys, I need a little help. I’m trying to make professional hollow baits. I have a design where I have two parts which I glue together and make one hollow piece. I plan on using a hobby injection molding machine and process to achieve a hard plastic lure. Is anyone else out there doing this or know of anyone doing this as a hobbyist or small production? What type of glue should I use, or is there another process I should be looking into?  Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

In an industrial setting, two piece plastic bodies are joined by ultrasonic welding.  Don't ask me how that works!  Seems to me that you can use the correct glue to join the halves of your baits.  I've used PVC cement, the type used to plumb PVC pipes, to glue plastic lures together and it worked fine.  But avoid the purple dyed primer because it will bleed through your finish to the exterior of the lure.  You can buy clear PVC primer in some states, in some states you cannot.  And I have no idea if the PVC glue can be used on all types of plastics.  But it worked OK for me when I wanted to shorten some plastic topwater walking baits.

I've heard of dipping the edges into acetone and then putting them together. Think I read this on one of the sites where they sell unpainted baits. A quick dip in acetone melts the edges enough that they will fuse together. It probably matters what type of plastic your using as well since some plastics will react to acetone better.

I have had best results with certain types of ABS glues for gluing certain plastics. I assume if you injection mold you will be using HIPS? If so you can spread out some ABS glue on a flat surface and rub one side of the bait on the glue and then attach. I have seen a video of someone making hollow baits by pouring epoxies and gluing them with epoxy but I can't remember who it was.

Hi, I am not really clear about what process and materials you are using, but I had trouble joining hollowed halves made from Alumilite regular. It was suggested I use Zap a Gap, which worked well, but has a very very short working time. What I found worked better was mixing small amounts of Alumilite Regular and using that as my glue. It has a longer working time and I think a better adhesion strength.
