Devcon 2 Ton Cure Issue

Recommended Posts

I put a topcoat of this on a lure this morning, and it is cured on all but one side, which is still a little tacky.

I mixed it from a syringe and stirred very slowly and made sure the lure was clean from any contaminants as well as using disposable gloves during the process.

Will that side eventually cure or will I need to put more epoxy on?

The one side probably won't cure all the way or won't cure properly.  Usually due to incorrect or incomplete mixing. If you're using a syringe, make sure it doesn't have the rubber on the plunger - D2T and other epoxies don't like silicone. On the bright side, you should be able to mix another batch and redo it and it should be fine.  Hope this helped and good luck.

Why slowly?  I mix the devil out of D2T and when I'm finished, it's milky due to the small air bubbles in it, which disappear when I brush it on with a fine bristle artist's brush.  If the mix is a little stiff when finished, I add in a FEW drops of denatured alcohol to make it more brushable and help it expel bubbles.  It should cure uniformly on the bait and be hard enough to handle in about 5 hrs.  The only reason I can see for it hardening on most of the bait but not in one area is that the soft epoxy was not included in your mixing effort.  If D2T has not hardened enough to hold in your hand after, say, 10 hrs, it almost surely never will.  You can repair it by applying another coat.

Thank you.

I can think of 2 things that might have gone wrong.

One was using a salsa cup and the circular depression in the bottom rim did not allow for a full mixing.

Two, I was brushing it on possibly past the workability duration.

After mixing it in the bottom of a soda can, I put on another coat this morning and will check it later on this evening.

I Hope this solves the problem.

The 'ole "bottom of a soda can" trick makes all the difference for me when using D2T... A drop or two of DA helps the flowout and also seems to assist in the coat levelling out... All that being said, once I started dipping baits to finish I have (for the most part anyway...) moved away from brushing on topcoats...

I use those little medical mixing cups you can get off ebay for like 3 dollars or so for a 100. I use them to thin my paints, mix epoxy and just whatever. Then i just trash them. Might consider getting some and trying them out. I sure like them.

For the longest time, I mixed the Devcon 2T on a pieces of glossy advertisement flyers and would mix the "s" out of it

and didn't have a problem with curing. Mixing is the most important step. If you think it's mixed, then mix a little more.
