JessRey
I've recently started carving some big swimbaits and am looking for some info as to what size screw eyes to use, length, diameter (0.92) is what was recommended to me from a buddy but I wasn't sure if 2" was enough or too much. If this is one of those type of forum topics that has been covered time and time again, sorry for being that guy. However, if someone knows the direct link to the post(s), I would greatly appreciate that instead. I'm going back to the search function now. Thanks everyone! nedyarb
I'm guessing people will want to know what type of wood your using!
JessRey
Sorry. I guess material would help. The current few I'm working on are PVC board so that is what im speaking towards. Also, I've got some dimensioned Alder blanks left over in my shop from a few guitar bodies I never cut out that I want to use as well. nedyarb
I've built small lures out of PVC, it holds screw eyes extremely well. I was using gorilla super glue to hold them. Mine were only about 3/4" long because the lure was just 2". It's ultimately up to you to decide but 2" seems like overkill to me. Good luck, Rob
Nathan
Jessray, What type of fish are you fishing for?...If it's salt water .092 is what I would use.If it's fresh water .072 stainless is some tough stuff... I think we tend to over build some times...Nathan
JessRey
Thanks Rob! I wasn't sure about length for the eyelets. I found some posts last night on another forum and the same was said, holds threads fine and a few have used gorilla glue as well. I'll probably just order a assortment of sizes and have them on hand for the future builds.
JessRey
Nathan, bass is the target audience. Should I use the same diameter for all eyelets; e.g. Line tie, hook hangers, joints?
Nathan
I usually try to..but sometimes the lure design may force you to use different lengths.Just be sure you get stainless...Nathan
quickdraw
I use .092 on 9-13" swimbaits built for large stripers and have never had a failure. On my baits 7" and under I use .072. My line tie is usually a 2" but the inline hardware for joints is 1 1/2". Hook hangers are 1". I also use a super glue when I set the screws. On your line tie and inline eyes you can drill your pilot hole slightly off of the horizontal axis so you don't have a direct straight pull on the eye when you have a fish on. It will still track straight when being trolled or retrieved.
JessRey
Thanks quickdraw! So, please excuse me if this sounds like a dumb question but which diameter do you use for you 8" baits? As far as the lengths, that's pretty convenient for me since I ordered all three sizes of both diameters today. I ordered some 0.62 and 0.51 Mag wire shafts too, will these be enough or overkill for the hinge pins?
stretcher66
use a stainless bicycle spoke for the hinge pin.

I use .125 brass rod for my hinge pins which fits right through the .092 screw eyes. On some of my bigger baits I have even used bigger hardware style screw eyes and the brass rod still works well.
