Mountain Man 26
If you sell a lure design to a company, what is a standard royalty off each bait. I am told that 3-4 cents off each bait sold is standard. Anyone have any experience to share? Thanks much!
Tracy G
I have no idea, but surely there is someone on here that knows, maybe they will chime in.
jt_ncbassman
I would honestly be surprised if there's a handful of people that have successfully pitched a lure design to a bait company, and then have that bait company recognize and respect their idea. There was an old guy in my bass club who is an incredible fabricator/welder ( I mean, this guy could turn a pitchfork into a house ) This man would take Rapala Floating Magnums, sand the nose down a little bit, and install a cupped piece of clear plastic about the size of a penny with bondo to the nose of the bait. It became known as the gouger-plug and was famous in our area. I can remember my dad stopping by his shop to pick up 200 dollars worth of gouger plugs before a post-spawn tournament. So, the club convinced Gouge to send his design principle to Rapala...... To my knowledge, the skitter pop was the first popping bass lure to feature a clear plastic popping surface that is larger than the actual body of the lure. A simple.... but kind of genius idea. Rapala said there was nothing they could do with his design. Talk about a slap in the face when the skitter pop came out a few years later. I would be curious to know if anybody has succeeded with pitching an idea though. Sorry to rant
nova
Like the old guy used to say;" you'll never get rich off of a rich man, only screwed".
bluetickhound
To my knowlege, Fred Young is one of the only guys to ever make a good business deal with a lure company that resulted in $$$ AND actual recognition for his design.... Jig Man
A friend of mine invented a way to remove the second blade on a spinnerbait and easily replace it. He got a patent and sold it to John L. Morris. He said that he got $10,000 up front and $.01 for each spinnerbait made. I don't know how it is going as he got cancer and died. Hughesy
The standard in the industry is 3 to 5% of the landing cost.
