Recipe Book For Skirts?

Recommended Posts

For me, skirt colors are pretty basic.

When I'm mixing and matching my skirt colors, I try and remember that contrast and natural colors are what gets the fish's attention here in SoCal, where our lakes are clear most of the year.  For me, it's browns and greens, with purple flake and some chartreuse for contrast.  Reds in shallow skirts add a blood hint, too.

For deeper jigs I'll use black and purple, because those colors are the ones that show up best at depth.

But I keep the accent colors, like chartreuse and red, to a minimum, so they are hints, not main themes.

In the late winter and early spring, when the bass first come shallower and are eating crawdads heavily, I'll add a little more red to my brown jigs, but that's the only time.

My very favorite finesse JNP combo for river small mouth fishing.

1 Tab of green pumpkin with blue flake on a 3/16 oz round head jig with a wire weed guard and a Bears chunk on darker green pumpkin with blue flake.  I intentionally make the chunk darker than the skirting material because it's rare that nature is monochromatic.

The whole package is about 2 inches long and will make a bass smack his jaws together.

I tie on one end of the tab to the top side of the jig, and then rotate the vise so that I can tie the other end of the same tab on the opposite side.  Trim the tab end to allow a little tail, and then cut the loop in half and trim about 3/16" off the ends.

edited to add;  skirts come from fishingskirts.com

I think it's called army green with blue flake now

1.75" Bear's Kodiak craw.  Killer little finesse jig on 3/16 oz round head with a wire weed guard.  Roughly 2" total length and deadly on hungry smallmouth in the shoals and eddies.

Thank you.  I was recently asked to build 30 jigs and 20 spinnerbaits for a tournament bass fisherman.  He's been using them and catching fish.  He took 4th two weeks ago and missed 1st place by 4 ounces.  As I build them I'll share a few recipes.  The attached photo shows a few build last week.

I lived in Magnolia and Hot Springs and fished Millwood, Ouachita, Hamilton, and Catherine and caught a lot of fish in each.  Millwood had the largest bass.  That's where I learned to Texas rig worm fish.  We made our own worms and had one that looked exactly like a real worm.  Great bait.  Another bait I used was a purple worm with white curled tail.

We have fished a lot of the same water. Millwood is a bit of a haul for me so I haven’t fished there. Pass by on my way to Toledo and Fork sometimes.

I also fished Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn.  Spent many days on Rayburn when it first opened.  We lived in Lufkin.  My dad used to dove hunt there before it was a lake.  We took many big Crappie in the old wood line out from Hank's Marina.  I never got to fish Fork.

Would you share a crappie skirt build with me?

I am curious about posting skirt colors on here, like they have for the soft plastics with the cookbook.

Maybe a picture of your jig and how many of what strands and color. Has this already been done?

I'm new to making jigs and just curious.

I posted a few that I worked on recently and I'll add more spinnerbaits and jigs as I go.   The red jigs are my Potomac Craw Slammers.  I made these for a friend of mine.
