jt_ncbassman
Don't know how many guys we have from Western North Carolina. But if there's anybody here that lives close to I-40 that runs through Hickory, then you're probably familiar with the Jamestown Flea Market in Morganton. There's an old man named Frank that runs "Market Hardware" and he always has loads of fishing tackle. It seems like everytime I stop to see him, another one of his old friends have passed away, and their wives are trying to get rid of their stacks upon stacks upon stacks of Old fishing lures. I first met Frank about a year and a half ago. I was burning the roads up in those days traveling to tournaments and I had been collecting Bagley lures for a couple years. The first time I looked through his tackle section, I found about 350 dollars worth of old Bagley BangOLures, which I paid 3 dollars a piece for. I was standing there with a sheepish grin. It was a big Plano box just crammed full of BangOLures in strange foil colors that I had to look up because I had never seen them before. I also found several old Lead-lipped DB-3 that still had most of the paint on them, and didn't appear to be water-damaged, so I fixed them up and have caught loads of fish on them. There was one box that I paid no attention to. It was a full size Plano that contained about 50-60 flatside, handmade crankbaits in every color you could imagine for 3 DOLLARS A PIECE. I could have and should have bought the whole box from Frank, but I didn't even buy one because I was stupid. I just have vague memories of the contents of that box, but I do remember some large-body lures (Gulp?) in Pearl Blue and Pearl Chartruese colors. They could have been Tapps for all I know. Needless to say, the next time I stopped by, the whole box was gone. This has been haunting me for a year. I was thinking that maybe one of you guys knows something about that box. The man who owned those flatsides? What kind they were? etc. I'm sure a couple of you guys know Frank anyway. He's a hell of a guy and I always enjoy talking to him and his wife. carolinamike
Good ole' Jamestown Flea Market, is it still located at exit 100? We used to go there almost every weekend, but that was years ago. We also used to work at the old I-40 flea market before they shut it down. I've often wondered if Jamestown is still in opperation, its an hour drive away but I may ride up there this weekend to see what they have now, I used to love to watch all the different types of people that came crawaling out of the hills on a saturday. jt_ncbassman
Haha, its still a happening place. Its not changed much since I was a youngin. You can still get a couple exotic snakes, 2 pair of Army Surplus camo pants, and a hunting knife all for less than 40 bucks. And if you're wearing a Dale Earnhardt shirt, they'll cut you an even better deal. Mike, do you know of anybody in the area who is making flatbaits or used to make them? I know there are some great looking custom cranks up at Foothills Marine, but the ones that Frank had looked like they were at least 10 years old.
