Mad Moose Baits
Hey guys, Thought I'd share my technique for scales. It works well for me because I don't tend to put the scales on the top if there are scales on the sides. I bought some scale material (used in this pic) but also use cut up shower body puffs. You can get them at the dollar store. What I have done is made a lure holder using a CD spindle and then stacked and glued the foam rings that come with spindles of CDs to protect the finish. I have place the mesh in a sewing circle (actually oval) and kept it a little loose so it can wrap around the bait. Here is a thread that I posted to show how I do it... Mad Moose Baits
That is slick! Thanks, Mark! One thing else...if I am doing a shad type bait with white sides and a dark top I may put the scale pattern on top, just depends on my mood. I just don't like having both sides and top scaled.... just a quirk I guess.

nedyarb
Ok, I have been using the Thule from hobby lobby. But I bought the mosquito mesh at Walmart and that works a million times better!
emptystringer81
Is the mesquito mesh better than a shower puff? is it smaller holes or what?
nedyarb
It depends what type scales that you prefer, I like this kind! And I can get this look with the mosquito net.
BigLewers
I cut the drink holder out of a camping chair. It works awesome for scales.

fatfingers
I prefer cotton netting over nylon, generally speaking, although I occasionally still use nylon if it is the only choice for the size/pattern of scaling I'm after. The cotton netting seems to less prone to shifting and also seems to have less problems with the paint wanting to bleed between the recesses. Also note that some netting has a 'grain' to it so that when you turn it horizontally you get one look and vertically another. mark poulson
I used some netting from garlic heads, which is nylon, and found that, depending on how I stretched it, I was able to get finer scales on one part of the bait and coarser scales on another.
