Bending Hooks

Recommended Posts

What's the best way to bend hooks. This is what I want to do. Take a straight shank Gamy or Owner worm hook and bend it to fit a flat eye jig mold. Reason being is I want the same hook style as the Gamy 5491 or the Mustad 32796.They have a bigger bite and shorter shank than say the Gamy 614.

The worm hooks are also a little smaller in diameter.

Thanks;

Nobody is going to be able to help do to the fact the bend is what I would consider extreme. You need to make a 60 degree bend and if you do it without heating the hook it is more than likely going to snap, if you heat it enough to bend you end up taking so much temper out of the hook it may not hold up and you'll end up losing both fish and jig. There ate EWG flat eye hooks that will work for those types of jigs if you want to go that route but bending a straight shank worm hook isn't a smart thing to do.

Take a small torch . Heat the bend point . once you bend it drop the hot hook in to a can of 90 weight oil . Have I done . Yes will it blow up . Never had a problem . There will be a whisp of smoke occasionally a tiny flame if you got the hook cherry hot . Which you don't need to do . You just need to weaken the temper enough to bend it . The reason you drop it in the oil is to reset the temper and protect the heat point .

This sounds good in theory, but In practice not so much. In fact, dropping In oil is the exact opposite of what you want to do. It increases strength but will make metal more brittle. The oil adds carbon. The way to temper metal is with exacting heatings and coolings. Way too much to explain here, but put it this way. You will not be happy with the effort and time needed to properly temper something like a hook.
