mark poulson
Most of the stuff we use to make baits is, at the least, irritating to our bodies, if not worse. I was reminded of that yesterday, when I had a couple of hours to work in the garage. I put some new skirts on some spinnerbaits, coated the blades with Sally Hansen "In The Spotlight" clear with small mylar strips (shhhhh!!!), and put a bait hanger on a new rod, a piece of sst wire that I held on with braid wraps, coated in super glue. Of course, since I was just "farting around", I didn't bother to put on the fan in the back of the garage, or to use a mask. I spent a miserable night with swollen sinuses, even though I hardly smelled anything while I was working. That's the real point. I've smelled so many chemicals over the years that my sense of smell isn't very good any more, but that doesn't stop those "unsmelled" chemicals from messing up my sinuses, and probably my lungs. Doh!!! I know better, but I forgot, again. Yeah, this isn't the first time I used a half a box of Kleenex, and reread five magazines, because my sinuses wouldn't let me sleep. So, a word to the wise, and a warning for you all. Now I'm going fishing!

RayburnGuy
Good stuff Mark. We all need to be reminded every now and then. At least I do. Another thing about getting a little older is that we don't heal as fast as we used to. Getting older is definitely not for sissies. littleriver
I agree Mark. One can not be too careful. A local lure builder I met here when I first started had several tumors removed from his body. He said they were due to the paint he was using. I knew then I wanted to be cautious of the products I used. I avoid using harmful products as much as possible and substitute something safer when opportune to do so. Though it is not always possible to avoid such products we can limit our exposure.
biggamefish
Thanks for this reminder, I need to wear my face mask more often, sanding resin baits with all the microballons and resin dust everywhere can be lethal for your lungs in the long term, thanks Mark! mark poulson
I think we are all our own worst enemies. "I'm just going to do a little bit, so why bother with a mask". How many times have I said that, and then suffered afterward. The worst part is I don't even remember the next time, so I do it again! How many times have I said that, and then suffered afterward. The worst part is I don't even remember the next time, so I do it again! So true. I'm sensitive to CA glue and also just discovered to nail polish also. Can't believe I used to pour lead in the basement 30 years ago. Sheesh. bill
mark poulson
So true. I'm sensitive to CA glue and also just discovered to nail polish also. Can't believe I used to pour lead in the basement 30 years ago. Sheesh. bill Hahaha....so evidently I'm not the only one. I used to pour pyramid sinkers for surf fishing, with copper wire loops from scrap wire off the job. I'd "borrow" the plumbers lead pot and ladel, and his lead, over the weekend, and pour in the garage. I'd use plaster sand for my molds, and just make new molds after each cast. Of course, that was a long time ago, when lead and white gas were cheap, so no one really cared. Those days are long gone.
