Looking For A Football/arkie Style That Takes Ewg Hooks

Recommended Posts

Also I forgot to mention, but an Eagle Claw EL111BP EWG should fit only in that football mold. That football mold takes a flat eye and a regular eye hook. Don't discount the Eagle Claws, as they are very sharp and good hooks. Also the Eagle Claw is a much heavier hook than the 38109 Mustad and it is a regular hook eye not a flat eye like the 38109. So you have some options.

Yeah, I always stayed away from the eagle claws just because of them being the lower end of hooks. But if you recommend those for the football mold over the mustad, they shook be good. I usually only use mustad, owner, trokar, and gammys.... But I'm open to try others if the quality is the same or better.

Thanks. I haven't poured a jig yet, but I know exactly what I'm looking for. Just don't know what some of the weed guard sizes are and what type of skirt keepers to get.

Just a quick run down on weedguards. They come in three stiffnesses (is that a word) (.018), (.021) and (.024). The heavier the weedguard the thicker the strands the less strands you have per bundle. Most of the molds take an 1/8" diameter weedguard. Some take a 5/32 weedguard, but if you look at the mold it will tell you which ones fit. You can pour them in place or you can glue them in after you get done painting. I prefer to powder paint all my jigs and then glue in the weedguards after the jigs are baked. Your choice. Just figure out which route you want to go.

If you are referring to skirt keepers as the rubber collars, then I would recommend hand tying the skirts with wire especially if you have a ball collar jig. Although the newer skirt collars are 100% better than the old style, they will eventually stretch out. Your choice . For ease of use and changing if you like to change on the water, then rubber collars are you only option.

Trust me you will like the Eagle Claw hooks. These are not your grandfathers old Eagle Claws. The new re-tooled ones are top of the line in sharpness and corrosion resistance.

Unless you can recommend a good flipping heavy cover jig mold? I usually use 3/8oz and a big trailer.

If you are looking for a flippin' jig I would not recommend a football jig. If you are fishing a lot of weeds, I would not recommend an Arky jig.  For flipping in grass and weeds, I would use any of these  Do-It molds. Grass Jig, Bullet bass jig, Poison Tail or Snootie jig. I'm sure there are a few more. All of these jigs will go through grass and weeds effortlessly. JMO.
