benm98
Hey y'all, I'm going to be fishing a lake stocked with channel and largemouths. What is a relatively easy chum for channel cats? Thanks.
RayburnGuy
There is a difference between "chumming" and "baiting a hole". I always employed the latter. It can be done with soured grain, congealed beef blood, canned cat food, chopped up shad that are allowed to "season" in the sun, etc. It involves putting your bait of choice into a net bag with a large enough weight to carry it to the bottom and tie it off to a tree after lowering the bag to within a foot or so of the lake bottom. If you use the canned cat food don't open the can. Just poke some holes into the can so it can "breathe". If this is just a one day trip then you'll have to "chum" them. If these fish have been fed after being stocked then you could use something like dry pet food as they will be accustomed to the sound of food hitting the water and will come to it. I've even used gravel like they use in road building to call these fish up since they associate food with the plunking sound when the gravel hits the water. If they haven't been fed then I would suggest using the stinkiest, most disgusting bait you can find. If it makes you want to throw up then it's probably about right for the catfish. Get a bucket of shad and cut them up into pieces and let them sit in the sun for a day or two. When you get to the pond throw a handful or two at a time into the water where you plan to fish. good luck, Ben
benm98
Yeah I'm only going to be there for Friday through Monday. So I could bait it Friday night and continually throughout the weekend. Thanks!
RayburnGuy
That should give you plenty of time to bait a hole using bait in a net bag. The channel cats usually come to it fairly quickly and will generally hang around until all the bait is sucked out of the bag. I would check it each day to make sure there was bait in the bag and refill it as necessary. And it doesn't hurt to add a can of cat food to your bait bag as it will continue to put scent in the water even when the other bait is gone. hope you catch a bunch, Ben
