texacan84
I design and make my own soft plastic baits. I had a thought today and don't know if it can be done or if anyone can point me in the right direction. The thought was making a crank bait head weather it was lead or plastic with a small bill and a single hook to slide on a plastic baits. The baits look like minnows and I have them from 2"-4",I was thinking about the tail action as the bait comes through the water. Is their anyone that can help or if it's even possible. Thanks. gone2long
Not sure a lead head would work but if you search Larry Dahlberg make a lure he has some good video's and I think you could modify the method for which he makes his A rig he also explains what products he's using. RayburnGuy
If you plan on casting a diving lip into the head you probably wouldn't have to cast it out of lead since the lip will make it dive. You could probably build a mold and cast it out of resin. I'm not familiar with building molds or using resins, but there are several people here at TU who are. I believe Coley has a lot of experience in this area so you might give him a holler and see if he can help. Ben
Travis
Definitely can be done and based on some of your posts you already well on your way. POP can be used as long as care is taken not to design a head that will lock into place. Husky, Art Brush, and a few others come to mind for information on molds and casting. Search "foamies" and you should find a list of names associated with the topic that can help. I have used POP, bondo, and RTV for most of my molds when making foamies. Travis
Essentially just make the mold in the typical fashion. I would attach the front line to the eye of the hook you select and cast it directly into the bait. The line tie being pinned into position during casting affixed to the hook and have the shank of the hook running out the mold. With RTV easier as with something like a 50 D or so. The mold with give but still seat well enough around the shank of the hook. You may need wrap some wire around the shank to increase surface area to lock the hook into the casting. Griffond
quick random thought on this... go to your local junk shop/ pawn shop buy a few different sized shad raps (wood) that are all beat up for cheap and cut the tails off of them with a hack saw and start prototyping from that... it was ohhh 10 years ago I think Berkley did stuff like this with there Power Bait line using a hard plastic head and a soft body of sorts... minnow bodies I don't think were real popular then heck it might be more then 10 years ago even... they had a rat trap bait and walk the dog one and a couple other I believe I found a pic of the rattle trap version googling around here it is....
