TSuprum
Hello everyone, first I want to thank everyone that has contributed information to help us rookie's get started pouring lures. Ton's of extremely useful info. It has helped me greatly and I'm sure the info has saved me money and time. So I'm to the point that I'm ready to order plastisol, colorants, glitter, Hi-lites, pearls and additives. I have made POP mold's, got a microwave, glass measuring cups, mixing cups, mixing sticks, gloves, a cooling pan, safety glasses and a small fan. I won't say I have everything I need because there is always something else, lol. I have also printed a lot of recipes. After doing all the research the most confusing thing to me is the colorants. What I can't figure out is, which colors to begin with and the amount I need (ounces). I've read anything from, start with base, colors, I.E... Black, White, Yellow, Red, Blue, Brown and Green to get all the colors, lol I will be making lures for a few friends, a few family members and mostly myself. I won't say i will never go to a higher level but I don't plan on it but you never know. I have been down that road with jigs, spinnerbaits, trout spinners and terminal tackle. I made the above items and sold them at local fishing flea markets and fishing shows. For now hand pouring is the way I want to go. Being able to modify molds and or lures is very appealing to me. Thank you for all the great advice but more is always welcome. Tony
Baitjunkys
Black. Green pumpkin. And watermelon is a good place to start. If budget is large, get a bunch. Larger the quanity less expensive it becomes per ounce. Do some research among different suppliers. Color is one thing not created equal. mark poulson
I would suggest you start out buying smaller quantities, and more colors, until you find what you really like and will use. Colorants that sit too long tend to have the pigments settle to the bottom and cake up, so you have to really shake the bottle with something like a BB or a sst nut in it to break up the pigment and get it distributed evenly again. You should shake any colorant you're going to use really well every time you use it, to make sure it's well mixed.
MonteSS
Black, White, Yellow, Red, Blue, Brown and Green I like your idea of starting with these colors. Only prob is good luck following and recipes exactly. ....Bill
gone2long
Hi Tony the best answer to your question is the one you ask yourself, what colors do I like to use? always get black it's an old standby now do you like watermelon/pumpkin/brown colors well they can be had strait up in a bottle what I'm getting at is it's best while learning to keep everything as simple as possible there are no magic colors that can do all so you just need to ask yourself what you like to throw and get those colors 1st that way you're not learning to be a mixologist at the same time learning to pour a great bait. TSuprum
Thank you all for the reply's. Every reply gave me something to think about. I was going to get 16 colors and I printed like 100 recipes. Of course I was thing about trying most from the get go. Well I realized I should follow K.I.S.S. I've been called "King Junebug" so I will start with variation of Junebug. Next would be pumpkin's, Watermelons and Browns. So now how much is a good amount in ounces. Is 1oz of each enough? Or should I go with 4oz of each. I have about $40 tagged for colors. Just thought of another question, what size flake would you recommend? The lures I will be mostly making are 4 & 5" stick worms, 7" curly tails, Super Flukes, trick worms and finesse worms. Thank you all for the advice. gone2long
Well that all depends on how much you plan on making 1 oz is fine if your just planning a few hundred but if your plan is to be all in go with 4 ozs. Flake goes along way so smaller sizes to get started are ok try to get 2 sizes of each color you choose its give more contrast to your baits. TSuprum
Thank you gon2long You put the colors in prospecctive for me. More junebug'ish coloring than other coloring. I never thought of getting 2 different sized flake in the same color. That was something that never crossed my mind. I'm glad i didnt place my order last night. I think i'm ready to place my order Thank you, Tony
alsworms
Using Lure Craft as an example: 4 ounce - 7 bucks 1 ounce - 4 bucks As you can see, a 40 dollar budget will not stretch too far. I know you save a bunch of money buying the 4-ounce size, but starting out I think it's best to get 10 of the 1-ounce size. From there, you can see what you pour the most and buy accordingly. As mentioned, flake can drastically change the look of your bait. I think the small and medium sizes are best to start with. Large black flake is great for swimbaits, flukes, etc. Depends on your flake budget. Oh yeah.......I think you'll be disappointed if you don't get white (or pearl) and black. Those 2 colors were always a MUST in my book. Black......besides the obvious and smoke colors.......can be used to darken pretty much any color, and many colors can be mixed with pearl to give the bait a nice swirl look. Just my Good luck, and happy pouring!
Slammingjack
Also on colors make sure it's nonbleed. Junebug is one of those colors that can bleed.
TSuprum
Here is my plan for colors. All colors are NB. I contacted Lure Works and ask them which colors won't bleed. They sent me a list of bleeding colors. There was a lot less. I was also informed they will be updating their website to specify which colors bleed. Junebug 4oz Watermelon 4oz Below will be 1oz: Black, White, Yellow, Scarlet Red, Brown, Purple, Orange, Phthalo Blue and Flo-Lime. I will be using the Flo-Lime as chartreuse. I like a greener chartreuse What do you think of my color selection? Would you replace X color for X color? Maybe I have too many base colors? The flake I'm going with is: Kelly Green - .015 Hex .035 square Dark Gold - same size as above Fire Red - .015 hex .025 square Comments on the flake? bryanmc
I almost always have some black flake in whatever I pour. I'd add 2 sizes of black.

TSuprum
I added black flake to my list. Am i good on the colorants?
gone2long
I think so but I personally would go 4ozs on the black as it is a very useful color for making colors darker you can make smoke with black and that is a very productive color and almost every bait comes in black and that's for a good reason. I like spike it products so i figured stick with a product from a company i'm familar with. Nothing against anyother company just a case of being familar with there product. Super fast shipping. Ordered on a sunday night had my stuff on Wednesday. I orderd 1 gallon of medium pourasol, 11 colorants, pearl power and hi lite power. I finally had a little time to try out pouring with fresh plastic. I can already tell i will go through the first gallon quick just getting colors the way i like, lol but its really fun to me. My wife not so much, lol she calls my mold making area the sweat shop. I use POP for molds. Going to try RTV next. I bought the small kit from hobby lobby. The shape of my lures are good but i dont have the shine i want yet. Guess i need to seal the molds better. I want to thank everyone for the advice. I'm offically on the road of pouring obsession.
