Xxsckarterxx
Ok guys just started this while airbrushing lures deal and have cleared probably 15 lures but havent tested them just yet. My question is I been using the devcon 5 minute epoxy. It's been working fine just have to get it on quick because I've yet to locate any 30 minute epoxy without ordering it. On the box it says nothing about it being waterproof and I just now realized it. Have I messed up here's a pic of what I'm using. I'm paint all plastic crank baits also. mark poulson
It is water resistant, not water proof. You need to find a water proof epoxy like D2T, their 30 minute epoxy and put another coat over the 5 minute. Scuff sand the 5 minute with fine grit paper, steel wool, or a scotch pad, wipe it down with denatured alcohol or acetone (move quickly if you use acetone), and then recoat it with the 30 minute. RayburnGuy
I've also read that the 5 minute epoxy will yellow much quicker. Ben
Skeeter
5 min. epoxy will work. But, it will yellow. The reason is the hardener is "Hotter" than the long cure. It is the same resin. 5 min. hardener is hotter to the touch when curing the resin. This is what causes the yellowing. Skeeter
barrybait
I found the D2T at Ace Hardware, Orchard Hardware, and Tap Plastics in my area. In the hardware store I stared at that rack of epoxies for awhile before I spotted it, had to read every one on the row but you are lookking for Devcon 2-ton. It is 30 minute epoxy I think and I can only do 2 crankbaits at a time even with that pot life it starts to thicken. If I try to get 3 baits done it seems like I miss a spot. I use the throw-away brushes from Walmart. $2.97 for a 30 pack. I cut about 1/8 inch off the brush length to stiffen it up a bit so I can spread out the D2T easier/quicker. Don't worry about brush strokes, with the longer pot life it self levels very nicely.

Skeeter Skeeter, Why does the 5 min. package say water resistant, and the 30 min. package say water proof? I've had the 5 min. fail when water got under my top coat and turned the 5 min. holding my hardware twist anchors soft and mushy, so they actually backed out. Never happens with the 30 minute. Maybe you're using a different brand than Devcon. Edited October 11, 2013 by mark poulson
Griffond
Where did you get the Devcon 5 minute at? Just ask that store to get you the 30minute if its a hardware store they can usually have it with the same week
BobP
First, kudos to you for managing to get 5 minute epoxy on a lure without it hardening. But yes, you messed up. Aside from the performance concerns above (with which I agree), quick cure epoxy cures too fast to level out and make the beautiful topcoat that Devcon Two Ton or another slow cure epoxy will. In my experience, 5 min Devcon doesn't just yellow, it turns an ugly brown pretty quickly when exposed to sunlight. I won't use it anywhere on a bait that will show after painting. Even a little squeeze-out from a lip installation looks ugly. The only place I use it nowadays is to rejoin the halves of a balsa bait after thru-wiring. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised when you get your hands on a slow cure epoxy - it's much easier to apply and works way better,
bobv
Also the faster the cure time the more brittle the finish.

Maybe you're using a different brand than Devcon. No, it was Devcon. I just don't seem to have the problems that others do. Devcon either hardens or stays soft from improper mixtures. It doesn't get soft and mushy from water. Oh, by the way, water should not get under your top coat. Skeeter
