CarverGLX
Trying to decide what color to paint a dog walker. It's a vixen. Currently it is golden shiner which has a silver plate in the core. Currently have flitter shad, bone, lime ice.... What other colors for topwaters do you guys like? Maybe something like a megabass deadly black? That would be a challenge. Give me some ideas. Thx in advance.
CarverGLX
Nobody uses topwaters I guess.
mark poulson
You can't go wrong with a black topwater. It is visible in low light, since it's always darker than the sky above, and in off colored water, too. Your Vixen is the size of a small bass, so maybe that's another choice. A small bass chasing shad would be a good meal for a larger bass. It would probably work well in the spawn and post spawn, when there are always small bass chasing fry. But I tend to stick with clear/silver back, silver/black back, bone, and black as my primary walking bait colors. A bass looking up needs to see the bait, but not too well.
CarverGLX
Thanks mark. Yeah I'm kind of leaning toward black too just because I don't see a lot of spooks that color. Trying to brainstorm and get an idea of things I'm not thinking of. Bass is a good one too. Hadn't considered that one but they make one that color. Maybe a hot color too, but I'm in a clear water area...idk. Getting ideas though.
markinorf
Bone. Bone. Bone. If you can easily watch the bait during the retrieve, your presentation is more lifelike. A stark white or Bone walker will get hammered on any day lite conditions when you impart that perfect random cadence that causes reflex strikes. IMHO. Youre gonna have trouble watching a black walker. Just my 2 cents...I use black at nite, but I have to concentrate, and listen up a lot more to know that its not fouled or is working correctly. (Lots of wind and traffic noise where we fish) Good huntin.
alsworms
Funny......I hardly ever visit the hard baits section, but I saw the topwater post and said "Hey.....I might actually have something worth 2 cents to say!" LOL We fish primarily in a shallow river. By shallow, I mean 6 feet is pretty deep, so fishing topwater all day is often very common for us. I'm a HUGE fan of any type of perch, bluegill, or clown color topwater patterns. Any type of red in our baits (including all soft plastics) will usually catch fish, so red lips are great producers as well. I'm one of the oddballs in that I never use a black bait. Never really thought of it, but I just might have to give it a try........... Hope this helps a little.
surfk9
I'm on the same page as alsworms....I'm huge on bluegill and perch patterns...both for my top water walk-the-dog baits and twitch/shallow running cranks...as well as my two gliders i've recently built....I don't think you can go wrong with a pattern as natural as these...just my .02 cents...surfk9
CarverGLX
Thanks guys. Brighter color might be good. Maybe a hot bluegill. Already have a bone one or I'd definitely paint it that. Hard decision where I'm mostly in a clear water area but do come across some dirtier water on other lakes from time to time.
littleriver
@CarverGLX Like markinorf, I too like bone. I was using this bait in bone this weekend on a clear lake and had very good results. Best fished early low light and cloudy conditions. I have seen some really nice fish with this bait and color. Friend was using foxy shad and too had several fish but they seemed to miss more than with the bone. http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Heddon_One_Knocker_Spook/descpage-HOKS.html Edited October 21, 2013 by littleriver

May hold off on painting that one until I see I need a backup.
RayburnGuy
Was there supposed to be a lure in that picture Carver?
CarverGLX
Was there supposed to be a lure in that picture Carver? Lol. Yeah. I'm not sure if we are catching bass or fisherman. Reaction Innovations is something else on marketing, bait names, color names....
markinorf
I don't know or really care why Bone is so productive. I hate this color! Its Butt-Ugly (like me). Every time I paint one, I have to keep reminding myself that despite the hassle of mixing up the paint to get the rite tint; it flat out works. It beats any other scheme (where I fish). I guess that's why its stayed around for so long...?? There must be a hundred recipes for Bone on this site.
