Weedless Jig Hooks

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am considering starting to make my own weedless flipping jigs to use down here in South Louisiana. My question is should I go with what I guess you would call a "regular" jig hook, or should I go with the wide gap hooks? I'm looking for pros and cons on both hooks for those of you who have knowledge about them.

Thanks

Depends on what mold you get, but there are several of them that will accept both. So you will have the best of both worlds.

I use both style of hooks. Both hooks styles work depends on how you set the hook and which one you are more comfortable fishing.

As Cadman has told you, it depends on the mold you are going to use and then it depends on how you fish. A good example is the poison tail jig, it uses both a 91768 EWG style hook, and the 32886 round bend hook, there are anglers who cannot stand the EWG hook because they lose a lot of fish on it and then there are others who will only use the EWG style hook. I compared both for quite some time and I found something out with the EWG hooks, if you tend to set the hook in a vertical manner, straight up and down then you may end up having a hard time with the EWG style hooks while the round bend is a lot more forgiving. The main thing with an EWG style hook is they hold better, the reason for lost fish is, and this is just my opinion from observation, is it seems as if the bend of the hook causes the jig to turn sideways when a fish takes it and when you pull up to set the hook you either pull it right out or you get just a little bit of the corner of the mouth. When you have a solid hook up with the EWG style hook they hold, I don't ever recall losing a fish I stuck really good with the EWG hook while I have lost some on the round bend but again, not many when you get a solid set. My fishing style works well with EWG style hooks but I don't use them on heavy jigs, on those that are 1/8oz to 3/8oz and a good EWG style flipping hook for a 1/4oz or 3/8oz bait is the new Eagle Claw L111BP. Those are the new black platinum series hooks from Eagle Claw, super sharp and the 111BP is a 2X strong flipping hook with the EWG bend, it is a vicious hook, another is the Gamakatsu 2034, it too is an extra strong EWG style flipping hook.
