Self-Tuning Line Tie

Recommended Posts

Mark - They stock Storm Araski at Anglers Marine, You will be at the Bass-A-Thon in 2 weeks?

You can check it out then.

Man, you're a buzzkill!  Hahaha

Of course, you're right, I'll see them there, and, hopefully, you, too, but I don't recognized you handle, or know your name.

PM me with it, if you would, so we can meet up there.  If you've told me before, forgive me.  CRS!

The idea of a self-centering line tie made me curious how it was achieved, and how it actually self centered.

What I reason is that, when the line tie is leaning toward one side, the other side of the lip has more surface area, and more resistance.  So the lure moves away from that side, toward the side with less resistance.

The line tie, since it is not anchored, would move toward the side of the lure with more lip surface, which would give it less surface area as the line tie passed the center of the lip.

I'm guessing the line tie would settle in the center of the lip pretty quickly, evening out the forces on either side of the lip.

I guess , that you've explained it very well , Mark , .....actually I haven't wasted too many thoughts on the exact hows and whys before  !

I only remember one occassion , that I came across such line tie for the first time many years ago , ...it was on a plastic crankbait , that I had mailordered from the USA , can't remember the brand , though .

Intending to connect the lure to the snap on the end of my line , I noticed , that the tow eye was moving , .....the two tag ends of the omega clip sat in a centered groove in the thicker center part on the underside of the lip .

Damn , ....I've thought that I had bought what we call a "Monday product" over here  , .....they've forgotten to fill up the groove with glue to fix the line tie :pissed:  !

But it did not take that long for me to figure out , that the loose line tie was intended :D  !

I assembled these line ties to quite a few of my recent deep divers , ......I find it less elaborate to furnish than a through wire harness , ...also I do not have to go through so much tuning work with every new bunch of lures done , .........and last but not least , .....I am pretty much convinced , that my assembly would also hold up against even bigger local pike .

@ mark poulson

First time for me to hear such , Mark , .... thanks for sharing your experiences , but sadly I do not have much of a clue as well  .

Maybe as the lure rolls around it's center axis , a line tie further standing off the lip provides more leverage to force the lure back , thus it won't roll to either side as far finally resulting into more stability of the wobble ?

If so , the loose self-centering line ties cannot fulfill this feature , as under the line pull they do not move about as much to be able to act as a lever .

My guess is you're right, that it would be that it reduces the uneven forces on the lure by moving farther way from the diving surface.

Following along that line of reasoning, as you said, it would probably reduce the action (wobble) of the lure as well, but, since I have never seen one of my deep divers swimming at full depth, I can't really say what it does.  They seem to have plenty of action when I pull them through the water next to the boat.

Oh, well, another of life's little mysteries that will probably go unsolved!  Hahaha

Hey, I've made baits that did this before..... it wasn't on purpose though!

Beauty is as beauty DOES, I guess, but the line tie doesn't immediately make me want to run out and buy an Arashi, at least until Tree_Fish starts posting some pics of Texas hogs he caught using his.

I've fished Speed Traps quite a bit and using a snap didn't make them self tuning.

If I remember correctly Luhr-Jensen lures used to come with the snap on them. At least the cranks I remember buying. Many claim that the single wire of a snap will free the bait up more than tying directly to the lure or even using a split ring. I've been using snaps for years, but for the simple reason it was quicker to change baits than cutting one bait off and then tying another on. But then not everyone fishes cranks like I do. I've had days where I might change baits, or colors of the same bait, 20 or 30 times in a day. This was mostly done when I was looking for fish or trying to fine tune an existing bite.

We are a pretty lazy lot over here and have been using "Omega clips" on Murray Cod and Barramundi lures for many many years - never used/made them myself as I think they reduce the potential depth of a lure--(just a hunch).

I reckon about 80% of any lures made here would have this style of tow point (or a variation)--I will do a search around here and post a few pictures of local makers lures, some lures with these clips have massive lips.

Not up on why they use this 'Omega clip' tow point other than the "self tuning", also why it works????? BUT I think with the clip being able to tilt away from the downside of an 'off centre' planning lip (clips usually has about 5 degrees play either way), it would counteract any tendency of the lip to roll and pulls/steers it back on line--- the least line of resistance ??.

Sooo....do you think putting a floating line tie on an unstable bait would make it stable?  Would it achieve an erratic action?

Inquiring minds want to know!  Hahaha

I don't think a floating line tie will do much for a shallow running square bill, since the line tie is in the lure body, and not on the bill itself.

But I'm thinking that a floating line tie will be on my next deeper diving crank, so I don't have to worry about tuning it.  Also, it will remove what is always a building pain for me, coating the line tie wire with D2T from the lure body up through the hole in the bill.

I'm lazy, too, and all about getting a lure into the water as quickly as possible.
