Slammingjack
I was thinking of getting this mold. I was wondering if it's any good. It also says you can put three different size hooks in the 1/8 and 1/4. Will the smaller hook be loose or move around when your try to pour? Plus it said to use eagle claw 570 hook, not a big fan of those. Is there a stronger hook that will work?
big will's customs
I can use a mustad 32756 or a 37188br wide gap or a matzo 9014 or a gamakatsu 604 in a smaller size hook. there are a couple others you can use just different brands I use mostlty the mustads and gamakatsus per what my customer wants.... god bless
smalljaw
Go to Captain hooks and get the Eagle Claw L570BP, this is the eagle claw 570 that is a laser sharp black platinum model. I would bet the cost of the mold that you couldn't tell the difference between that hook and the Mustad 32746. The black platinum hooks from Eagle Claw are awesome, some find it hard to believe but I now have guys that get shaky head from me asking for the black platinum hooks, they pay less and sacrifice nothing in hooking performance and strength, try them out, you'll also notice they cost more than double of the regular 570 but still less than Mustad and just as good if not better. Another thing is you mention that you want a stronger hook, what do you mean stronger? I ask because this mold (which doesn't exist, I think you mean RDB-8-48) uses Aberdeen hooks, some hooks will be sharper than others but they basically are all designed to bend straight if you get hung up. What do you want the jig for? If you tell us what you are going to use it for and how strong of a hook you want I'm sure we can recommend the perfect jig for your application. Slammingjack
Thank you guys. smalljaw thx for catching my typo. Yes I did mean RDB-8-48. I do a lot of Southern Flounder fishing (flatties). So i'm fishing in saltwater. Most of the soft plastic bait are on the small side. 1.5" up to 3.5". Using a 2/0 hook is pushing it. Because of the flatties mouth. I liked that mold because you get 4 1/8 oz and you can use 2,1 or 1/0 hook. I would use 1 or 1/0. 4 1/4 oz size 1, 1/0 or 2/0. I would use 1/0 or 2/0. I have used Aberdeen hooks in some jigs and caught a lot of flatties with them, but I also lost some other bigger fish. Because the hook straighten out. Must saltwater jigs I have seem are just too big. What would be great is a 1/2 oz with a 1/0 hook. But can't find that anywhere. The Indian river where I do most of my fishing is tide driven. The currant can really rip at times. So I was looking for a hook that would fit in that mold or some other mold without being so easy to bend. But want to use 1, 1//0 or 2/0 hooks Thank you for your time guys.
smalljaw
How about the JG-6-A, the flat grub mold? That seems to be within the scope of weight and hook size and the hook it uses is a heavy hook model. I know there is a Mustad, Owner and a Gamakatsu hook that will fit that mold, I'm just not sure you can find them in the smaller size #1 and 1/0 sizes but the 630 and 635 the mold calls for should work for the application. Check it out, much better than the round head because of the hook type required.
