barr5150
Curious where everyone is buying their lumber for building cranks at? I have been building flat sided lures and I recently purchased 4" x 12" x 1/2" basswood planks from a company online. Problem is, the company claimed all the wood was milled to 1/2" thick but in reality they are more in the range of 9/16" - 7/16". Not real good if your trying to duplicate lures. I'd probably be okay if they were all within 1/32" to each but an 1/8" is too much. Anyone know of a good source?
benton B
www.nationalbalsa.com, they sell basswood also.
barr5150
They only carry basswood in 1" thickness and up. I'm looking for 1/2", it is cheaper then I paid though...
benton B
Look at the basswood sheets, it's misleading. You can get the 1/2" thick wood.
ravenlures
Why not popular which you can get at any Menards or Lowes or Home Depot. I would also just ask them if they can get you what you want most likely 8' long, or check any mill in the area out. Of course theres always PVC. barr5150
From what I have read people say to stay away from poplar. I guess if it gets wet it swells real bad? Benton, thanks for the link. I was looking under planks not sheets.
RayburnGuy
That's why we seal the wood. To keep it from getting wet. Even basswood lures can be ruined if the top coat and seal coat fail. If this is a major concern then you might want to look into using PVC for your baits. bassguy
I have a friend that builds his baits out of poplar, and has a thriving business. He does take major precautions to make sure the baits are well sealed from water intrusion. Jerry
barr5150
I think I might try poplar. I know I read on here somewhere to stay away from it but I guess as long as I seal it I should be good. I stopped by Home depot but they didn't have what I was I was looking. Gonna try Lowes tomorrow.
