ROWINGADUBAY
I was dead set on getting an ear ball mold in the small sizes I went to barlows website to order one and discovered that do it now makes a football shaped head of the same sort of jig I will be using this jig mostly for jig/minnow combo in thw rocks for walleyes and some bass worm fishing. I now want to get the football headed one because I believe it would be easier to pour with the one piece insert poured with a hook already attached. My question is am I better off using a round or football head in the rocks, and am I losing anything by getting the football head over the round head? gone2long
The football head excels in rocks over many other designs that's what it was designed for. Just stay away from the grass.
smalljaw
I fished the Biffle hard head before any mold was available and I also fished with a few of them made with the ear ball mold, huge difference in versatility but depends on how you use it. I used the original hard head just like Biffle explains to do, basically fishing it like a crankbait over shallow rock flats. Fishing it like that both work fine but when you stop it, that is where the football head shines, the ear ball would sometimes roll on its side when you pause it and if you would drag it the line tie would often dig in a rock, I lost one like that but all in all I liked the football head better but the ear ball wasn't bad, remember, this is for fishing hard bottom areas, the presentation doesn't work at all on weedy flats or soft bottom areas. Twindad90
I have the football swing jig mold now and plan on trying it out hopefully soon. I know with my football jigs they shine in rocks or hard bottom. Smalljaw is dead on football heads are not made for grass. Smalljaw have you ever tried a big (8"-9") worm with it? I like fishing a big worm like that and wondered how it would work. It could be dragged almost like a Carolina Rig maybe.

A large worm would work, I have used the Biffle Bug, as well as beaver style baits, craws and swim baits, the worm would be a great bait for that type presentation. mark poulson
On Western Bass, a fishing forum, a jig maker suggested putting a slip sinker in front of light jigs to add weight, but keep the profile smaller. I'm guessing he pegs the sinker tight against the jig. That might work to help get football heads through grass, if that's all you have in the boat.
