Maybe I'm too picky, but if I was going to start selling tubes I would probably go with a mold like this. Get one and let us know how it works!!! It works very well and produces a nice slender profile tube consistent with cabin creek tubes, which was exactly what I was looking for. tsic Posted January 26, 2014 Author Report Share Posted January 26, 2014 After I got the tail cutter block I found out It was hard to press it enough to do a good job cutting the tails, I had a french fry cutter with a long handle and adapted the block to fit on it, the bottom wooden block has a jig cut out to keep the tubes aligned. smallmouthaholic Posted January 26, 2014 Report Share Posted January 26, 2014 (edited) Tail cutter presses and/or rotary fabric blade cutters produce inconsistent ,cut tails and can be difficult/frustrating .The rotary cutters can somewhat dangerous to use.Been there,done that w/ both types years ago. I don't think it matters when it comes to tubes to be honest and have several guys that say they like the different cuts because of various reasons (I don't buy into this but sure what ever floats their boat). I honestly don't know why many guys mess with pouring or injecting on small scale. Over the years it is funny that handpour/handmade lures now means trying to make a mass produced bait. Guys try their best to duplicate colors, texture, looks, numbers, etc.. of the big guys. Nothing differentiates their product from any other (and in many cases worse) than what you can go into a box store and buy. It would be cheaper and far less time time to just buy bulk from other sources and repackage as the products many are pushing have nothing to do with being a custom or different quality bait anymore. 3 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
tsic Posted January 27, 2014 Author Report Share Posted January 27, 2014 I don't know how a commercial tail cutter press works but my home made press with the lure craft block is great I get consistent uniform cuts with it, it may be because of the long handle which requires very little pressure. Plus what else am I going to do during winter when I'm not fishing? Tsic, what did you use to create your homemade press? I've looked at bearing presses and other similar presses but haven't found one similar to the press on lurecraft. I'm sticking with my razor blades in a block of wood, set in by jb weld and spaced out with washers. I use a rubber mallot to pound the back of the block with the tube lying on another wood block. Lubricating the tube with a little worm oil helps a lot. It works well for me, but I'm always looking for ways to improve the process (short of buying $100 single cavity molds with injected tails) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
