barr5150
Trying to get a feel for what people consider standard for a 2.5" flat sided crankbait. I have been using #3 heavy from jann's but it seems overkill. I have around 100 cranks heading to a show in a couple weeks and I'm out of split rings so I have to place an order anyway. The brass rings from LPO look pretty neat for a little more money. Thanks in advance. - Bryan
mark poulson
I use the Danielson rings from Tacklewarehouse. I'd stay away from brass. It isn't as strong unless it's thick wire, and it looks old school and turns a lot of people off.
barr5150
The old school look is what caught my eye! I'd hate to sacrifice strength for quality though. What size would you consider typical?
mark poulson
I haven't used brass or bronze split rings in years, but the same sizes that I use now, probably. Depending on the lure and hook size, anything from a #2 to a #6 on my swimbaits. I wouldn't use a #2 on anything that is thrown with line heavier than 10lb test, or you'll have your heart broken. Even a #3 is pushing it.
barr5150
Maybe the #3 heavy rings aren't crazy then. Thanks for your input!
A-Mac
#2 south bend rings are incredibly strong. They put my owner hyper wires to shame and are CHEAP. They are so tuff, you may regret getting them if you are putting a lot on. Safety goggles are a must too!
mark poulson
Amac, I just checked them online and they look great. Plus I have a Sports Chalet nearby.
BobP
I put standard #2 ss split rings on 99% of all bass baits with #6 to #2 trebles. Never had one fail. If I fished where muskies lurked, I might go thicker wire.
toadfrog
I use the heaviest split ring I can depending on the type and size of the bait . Only because I fish a lot of water with pit falls like stumps ,rocks and other gotcha's
